Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Aldi is known for their affordable and delicious grocery options. But when you don’t want to cook, they have you covered there as well!

The Aldi line Mama Cozzi’s offers a variety of delicious calzone options, right in the refrigerated section. I found mine next to the cheeses, but it may vary from location to location.

Flavors may vary depending on the season and availability, but I had a selection of pepperoni, four cheese, and buffalo chicken. However, I’ve also seen meatball, spicy sausage, and Philly cheesesteak options in the past.

Regardless of what variety you choose, your air fryer is the perfect choice to cook up your Aldi calzone. You’ll get a warm, melted cheese center and browned, crisp crust on the outside. It takes less time than the oven, and delivers a better texture than the microwave!

Recipe FAQs

Can I Cook Aldi Calzones in the Air Fryer Directly from Frozen?

Yes, you can cook Aldi calzones in the air fryer directly from frozen, if you have chosen to freeze your calzones.

Preheat the air fryer, place the frozen calzone inside, and add 3-5 minutes to the refrigerated cooking time to account for the frozen state.

What Is the Recommended Temperature for Air Frying Aldi Calzones?

The recommended temperature for air frying Aldi calzones is usually around 375°F (190°C).

If your air fryer doesn’t have that specific setting, use the next closest option. Both 370°F and 380°F should deliver similar results.

How Long Does It Take to Cook Aldi Calzones in the Air Fryer?

Cooking times may vary, but generally, it takes about 10-12 minutes to cook Aldi calzones in the air fryer.

Different flavors vary in weight, and there is natural variation between air fryers, so this is just an average ballpark. Adjust as needed based on your specifics.

Can I Use Parchment Paper When Air Frying Aldi Calzones?

Yes, you can use parchment paper or even nonstick when air frying Aldi calzones. It helps prevent sticking and makes cleanup easier.

Make sure to cut it to size so that it doesn’t block airflow in the air fryer. Additionally, make sure to never add parchment or foil alone (without food on it), as it can blow up into the heating element.

Should I Preheat the Air Fryer Before Cooking Aldi Calzones?

It’s recommended to preheat the air fryer for a few minutes before cooking Aldi calzones. This ensures even cooking and better results, and helps to avoid wet spots on your calzone.

If you don’t want to preheat, add about 3 more minutes to cooking time, and flip one more time during cooking to help ensure evenness.

Can I Reheat Leftover Aldi Calzones in the Air Fryer?

While Aldi calzones are a single serving, if you do have leftovers, yes, you can reheat them in the air fryer.

Reheat your portion at a lower temperature of around 325°F for a shorter time (2-3 minutes) to avoid overcooking.

Are Aldi Calzones Suitable for Specific Dietary Preferences, Such as Vegetarian or Gluten-Free?

The Aldi four cheese calzone is the only vegetarian option currently offered, though that could change in the future.

Aldi does not currently offer a gluten free calzone option.

Aldi often offers a variety of calzones, including vegetarian and potentially gluten-free options. Check the packaging for dietary information.

Can I Add Extra Toppings or Ingredients to Aldi Calzones Before Air Frying?

Since Aldi calzones are already pre-made and prepackaged, you cannot add extra ingredients to them before cooking.

If you would like something additional, feel free to serve with a side of dipping sauce, sauteed vegetables or a charcuterie board to allow for modification after cooking.

Recipe Pro Tips

  • It is normal for the calzones to leak slightly during cooking. I noticed it more so with the pepperoni flavor, so it may vary based on the flavor you choose. Feel free to use a small piece of parchment underneath the calzone to make cleanup easier!
  • I made my Aldi calzones in a Ninja air fryer and they were cooked (verified via instant read thermometer) after 13 minutes total. Other air fryers may vary slightly

Storage and Reheating Tips

  • Store leftover Aldi calzones in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For longer term storage, wrap and freeze up to 3 months
  • To reheat any leftover portions, place in the air fryer for 3-5 minutes at 325°F, or until warmed through. The time will vary slightly based on the size of your piece

Aldi Calzone Review

aldi pepperoni calzone cooked in the air fryer cut in half and stacked on a plate with marinara sauce

In case you were wondering what I thought of these calzones, I’ll share my opinion!

My husband and I tried both the pepperoni and the buffalo chicken flavored Mama Cozzi’s calzones. We both felt that they were well stuffed, with a good amount of meat and cheese in both.

In terms of portion size, I feel they are adequate for a lunch, but you may need something additional added as a side for dinner. I served them with a green salad and it was perfect!

The packages both advertised ricotta cheese filling (an important component of a calzone!) but both my husband and I didn’t see any in either of the calzones. They’re more like calzone-shaped stromboli.

Instead of a pizza dough, the exterior is more like a bread dough. It’s not bad in any way, just might not be what you’re expecting.

The filling definitely doesn’t extend to the corners, so grab some sauce for dipping the bread triangles on the sides! Overall I thought the buffalo chicken one could have used more buffalo sauce as well.

All in all, we both enjoyed our calzones, and they made for a quick and easy weeknight meal along with a side salad. For under $3 (prices may vary depending where you’re located) I think they’re a great value, and I would get them again!

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a quick and easy meal option, then look no further than an Aldi calzone in the air fryer. These single serving calzones are available in a variety of flavors to suit any taste!

While they are available in the refrigerated section of the store, these calzones also freeze well for months, making them a simple option to have on hand.

The air fryer does a great job of delivering a crisped, browned exterior and gooey cheese on the inside in less time than a traditional oven, and with a better final texture compared to the microwave. You can’t go wrong!
