Air Fryer Crunchwrap Supreme: Taco Bell Copycat Recipe!

Sometimes I just don’t feel like getting in the car and driving to my local Taco Bell. Thankfully, now I don’t have to! This air fryer Crunchwrap Supreme is one of my favorite copycat recipes to get that delicious crunch right at home. Plus, you can top it and customize it any way you like!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

This air fryer Crunchwrap is just like your Taco Bell favorite, except instead of waiting through the drive thru, you can just make one at home anytime!

Stuff it with your favorite fillings and toppings to make your own version – that’s something you don’t get at the restaurant! Plus, you can definitely pack it with more meat (the last time I ordered one I definitely felt like the ground beef was lacking)!

The air fryer does a great job of getting that toasty, crispy exterior on the tortilla wrap to give you that crunch! In fact, it’s actually more crispy outside than you’ll get from the restaurant!

Enjoy a Crunchwrap Supreme anytime you like, whether for Cinco de Mayo, Taco Tuesday, or just a regular weeknight. They’re easy and delicious, so you really can’t go wrong!

If you did head to the drive-thru, you can also learn how easy it is to reheat a Taco Bell quesadilla in the air fryer to savor that fresh taste the next day!

Ingredients List

ingredients to make copycat crunchwrap supreme in the air fryer
  • 1 pound ground beef (85/15 or leaner)
  • 1 ounce packet taco seasoning (I use the Taco Bell seasoning)
  • ½ cup water
  • 4 large burrito size flour tortillas (11” – 12” size)
  • 4 small street taco flour tortillas (4” – 5” size)
  • 4 tostada shells (about 5” diameter) (such as Old El Paso)
  • ½ cup nacho cheese
  • 2 plum tomatoes, seeded and diced
  • ½ cup shredded Iceberg lettuce
  • ¼ cup sour cream

Ingredient Tips and Substitutions

  • You can also substitute other meats instead of ground beef, such as ground turkey or chicken, or use a vegetarian meat substitute if preferred (like Morningstar chorizo crumbles)
  • Any taco seasoning brand is fine (as well as homemade) but since I’m making a copycat recipe, I think the Taco Bell brand is best!
  • They don’t sell their nacho cheese (yet, at least), so I usually use Rico or Pace brand
  • You can adjust the ratio of toppings, swap the veggies, or omit things you don’t like – that’s the beauty of making your own! However, I’ve included the classic Taco Bell recipe options here

Step By Step Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef and the taco seasoning, and mix until well combined. You can use your hands or a mixer for this

  1. Add the seasoned beef and the water to a skillet on the stove over medium heat and cook for 5-7 minutes, until there is no pink left, breaking up the meat into very small pieces as you go. The final product should be smooth (no large chunks) and slightly wet still. Tip: use a potato masher or a ground meat chopper to make this easier
add seasoned beef and water to skillet and cook until browned
  1. Lay one of the large burrito shells down on a clean work surface, and add ¼ of the nacho cheese sauce (about 2 Tbsp each) to the center of it. Then, top with ¼ of the cooked ground beef. Make sure to spread the layers out evenly to avoid lumpy Crunchwraps

  1. Wrap the bottom (large) tortilla tightly up around the sides, making pleats on the top as you go (it should look a bit like a pinwheel), and then flip the Crunchwrap upside down, so the pleats/seams are on the bottom
carefully wrap large tortilla up around the sides
  1. Set the Crunchwraps into your air fryer in a single layer with the seam side down, and spray the tops with cooking spray (I use olive oil spray)

  1. Cook on the air fry setting at 400°F for 5-7 minutes (until it starts to brown), then flip (so the pleats are face up), spray with another coating of oil, and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until this side is also browned. Air fryers can vary, so add additional time as needed and based on preference of how browned you want it
  2. Serve hot, with your favorite sides if desired!

Recipe FAQs

What is an Air Fryer Crunchwrap?

An air fryer Crunchwrap is a delicious and crispy Tex-Mex-inspired dish featured at Taco Bell, which is made with layers of seasoned meat, cheese, vegetables, and a crunchy tostada shell, all wrapped in a large flour tortilla.

While typically griddled or grilled, in this case, it is cooked until golden and crispy on the outside in an air fryer.

Can I Customize the Fillings in My Air Fryer Crunchwrap Supreme?

Yes, you can customize the fillings in your air fryer Crunchwrap Supreme according to your preferences. You can use different types of meat, such as seasoned ground beef, shredded chicken, or seasoned tofu for a vegetarian option.

Additionally, you can add ingredients like sautéed onions, bell peppers, jalapeños, avocado slices, or black olives to add unique flavors and textures to your Crunchwrap.

How Long Does it Take to Cook an Air Fryer Crunchwrap?

The cooking time for an air fryer Crunchwrap typically ranges from 8 to 12 minutes, depending on the temperature and efficiency of your air fryer.

Simply cook the Crunchwrap until it is golden and crispy on the outside and heated through on the inside.

Can I Prepare Air Fryer Crunchwraps Ahead of Time?

Yes, you can prepare air fryer Crunchwraps ahead of time and store them in the refrigerator until ready to cook. Simply cook your meat and assemble the Crunchwraps as directed, then wrap them individually in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.

When ready to cook, remove the plastic wrap or foil and place the Crunchwraps directly in the air fryer basket.

How Should I Serve Air Fryer Crunchwrap Supremes?

Air fryer Crunchwrap Supremes are best served hot and crispy, straight from the air fryer. You can enjoy them on their own or with your favorite dipping sauces, such as salsa, guacamole, sour cream, or hot sauce.

Pair them with a side of Mexican rice, chips, or a fresh salad for a complete and satisfying meal.

Recipe Pro Tips

  • If you want your sour cream to have more of a thin consistency like Taco Bell, you’ll need to beat it in a bowl or mixer until it thins (or add a tiny bit of water to it)
  • To cook the ground beef in the air fryer (if you don’t have a stove to use), season it, spread it relatively evenly, and cook for 8-10 minutes at 400°F, until cooked through. Break it up well after cooking, and add a small amount of water to achieve the right consistency. The stove version comes out better in my opinion, but this works fine if that’s not an option for you!
  • If your tortillas are stiff or your cheese is too thick, microwave them for 15-20 seconds in either case to loosen things up slightly
  • Note that your lettuce is going to be soggier than it is at the restaurant. To get that nice crunch, we’re heating it longer than the quick press it gets usually, so it’s unavoidable. You can stuff a little extra in after cooking by cutting the Crunchwrap in half if it bothers you (but you won’t be able to unwrap the wrap)

Storage and Reheating Tips

  • Crunchwraps are best enjoyed fresh. However, you can store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days in an airtight container or zippered bag
  • To reheat a Crunchwrap in the air fryer, air fry at 400°F for about 5-7 minutes, until warmed through and re-crisped

Final Thoughts

If you’re craving that Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme, make your own at home! It cooks up with a nice crispy shell (even crispier than the restaurant) in under 15 minutes thanks to your air fryer.

I like this version even better, since I can really load it up on toppings (let’s face it; I always feel like they’re skimpy with the meat)! Plus, I can add other toppings not even on the normal menu, like jalapenos for a spicy kick.

It’s the perfect recipe for Taco Tuesday, Cinco de Mayo, or anytime you want that Crunchwrap goodness without having to leave the house!
