When it’s colder out, I don’t think anything beats a delicious classic tomato soup to warm you up. If roasting a tomato over an open flame sounds more dangerous than fun, don’t worry. I’ll show you how to make air fryer roasted tomato soup for an easy preparation method.
Make it a meal when you pair it alongside some simple grilled cheese in the microwave!

Can You Really Make Soups in an Air Fryer?
Yes, you can make soups in an air fryer, though there are some exceptions.
Air fryers are ideal for roasting veggies, cooking meats, and browning or melting cheeses. Once you’ve got those cooked up, you’ll want to add liquids and grains or pasta afterwards.
With something like chicken noodle, you’ll cook the chicken and veggies in your air fryer, and then may add to broth and pasta cooked on the stove or in the microwave.
For the roasted tomato soup here, though, since it has no pasta and very little liquid, almost all of this soup can be made in the air fryer.

What Happens When You Put Tomatoes in the Air Fryer?
When you put tomatoes in the air fryer they will become very juicy inside, while getting a wrinkly and sometimes browned skin.
This is great for making soup, pasta sauce, and any other time you’d like to enjoy a juicy, warm tomato in your dish.
If you overcook them, however, you’ll turn them leathery or even crispy, so it’s important to keep an eye on them.
Air Fryer Tomato Soup Cooking Instructions
- Preheat your air fryer to 400°F, following manufacturer guidelines

- Cut large tomatoes in half, placing in preheated basket cut side up

- Add cherry tomatoes, onion quarters, and garlic bulb to the basket

- Drizzle or mist with olive oil (make sure to oil the garlic bulb well) and season with salt and pepper

- Cook on air fryer setting for 20 minutes at 400°F
- Add herb cheese cubes to basket and cook for an additional 5-10 minutes until cheese begins to brown

- Remove everything from the air fryer. Peel skins of tomatoes if desired (optional) – they should be loose. Squeeze garlic cloves from their skins and discard skin
- Season with salt and pepper to taste, and 2 fresh basil leaves if desired

- Add everything to a blender, food processor, or into a bowl for use with an immersion stick blender

- Pulse until smooth, then thin with a splash of heavy cream or half and half to desired consistency
- Top with croutons or serve with a side salad or sandwich

I think that tasty air fryer croutons make an excellent topper, but store bought work as well.
Roasted tomato soup makes a great lunch or dinner, especially when paired up with some sides! It also reheats well in the microwave or on the stove, so I enjoy it for lunch for a couple days usually.

Can You Reheat Soup in an Air Fryer?
You can reheat soup in an air fryer, but you’ll need to place it in an oven-safe bowl to do so.
Fill your bowl about ⅔ full with soup, cover with foil, and air fry at 375°F for approximately 5-10 minutes, or until heated through. I also recommend stirring halfway to help with even heating.
This method definitely takes longer than a microwave, but if you don’t have a microwave it’s still a viable option for sure!
Final Thoughts
Air fryer roasted tomato soup is easy to prepare, while being thick, creamy, and satisfying to enjoy. While it still takes a while to cook, it’s very quick to throw ingredients in and just let it go. Blend it up for a perfect tomato bisque soup that’s great for dipping!

Notes
- I am using an heirloom cherry tomato mix for variety, but any cherry or grape tomatoes are fine
- The best onions are red, sweet, or yellow. I used half red, half sweet here
- Boursin pre-cubed cheese is very convenient, but you can also chop up a larger block. The herb and garlic is best I think, but the shallot and chive variety works well too
- Olive oil may be swapped out for avocado oil, grapeseed oil or a similar high smoke point oil if preferred
- The immersion (stick) blender will give you a pretty chunky consistency (pictured). If you prefer smoother, use a regular blender instead
- This recipe is very adjustable to taste. You can add more tomatoes if you like it thinner, less cheese if you want to reduce thickness, and reduce garlic if you want it less bold
- Fat free half and half works great in this recipe if you’d like to reduce calories a bit, or you may substitute a non-dairy milk as well
- This soup comes out in a bisque-like consistency, which is hearty and perfect for dipping rolls, grilled cheese, etc
- Add additional cream, stock, and/or tomatoes if you would like a thinner consistency
- Nutrition facts will vary based on specific ingredients used, so please consider this a rough guideline
