Bunches
fresh sage leaves
washed and dried if needed
Instructions
Place a paper towel on a microwave safe plate
Remove sage leaves from the stems by pinching at the base and pulling apart with your fingers
3 Bunches fresh sage leaves
Spread leaves in a single layer on the paper towel
Top the layer of sage leaves with another paper towel, tucking the edges under the plate
Microwave on high for 30 seconds, then check
Continue microwaving in 30-second increments until sage leaves are dry looking and crinkle when touched
Crunch sage leaves with your fingers for larger pieces, or use a mortar and pestle to grind leaves into a fine powdery dust (optional)
Store dried sage in an airtight container or spice jar
Notes
Average sage drying time is about 3 minutes in a 1000W microwave
Try not to overlap leaves on plate, and lay them as flat as possible to start (they will naturally curl up more as they dry)
Tucking the ends of the paper towel under the plate keep it from flying off and knocking your herbs around in the microwave
This amount of fresh sage should produce around 1 Tbsp ground dried sage
Breaking with your fingers gives you larger pieces, whereas using a mortar and pestle will get you a fine, powder-like grind
Store in an airtight container or spice jar for best results
Dry sage keeps well for 2-3 years if stored properly. After that, while still safe to consume, it loses potency and flavor significantly
