I love hosting Halloween parties as an adult, and this witch’s heart cocktail is always a crowd pleaser! The apple and blackberry combination is perfect for fall, while the vodka base keeps it neutral and easy to drink. The vibrant color and glittery final touches really make it shine!

What is a Witches Heart Cocktail?
A witch’s heart cocktail is a visually striking, Halloween vodka mixed drink known for its spooky appearance and fruity flavor profile.
It combines apple vodka with black currant or blackberry liqueur, cranberry or apple juice, and optional shimmering ingredients like edible glitter or luster dust to create a dark, mystical drink resembling a witch’s potion.
The cocktail is served in a martini glass with a “heart” garnish that enhances its eerie appeal, but you could add other options to wow your guests, like including dry ice for a smoky effect (but I personally prefer not to mess about with that)!

This vodka cocktail is popular for adult Halloween parties due to its fun, dramatic presentation that looks like a witches brew, and the contrast between its fruity sweetness and darker aesthetic for the season.

Witch’s Heart Cocktail Ingredients

- 1 ounce apple vodka
- 2 ounces blackberry schnapps or brandy
- 3 ounces apple juice or cider
- ½ ounce grenadine (about 3 tsp of grenadine syrup)
- ½ ounce lemon juice
- ¼ tsp food grade purple luster dust
- Maraschino cherry
- 1 drop red and 1 drop blue food coloring (optional; see notes)
Ingredient Tips and Substitutions
- You can also substitute another apple-flavored liquor, or use plain vodka instead (and let the apple flavor come from the apple juice/cider
- Instead of blackberry liqueur, you can use black currant, black raspberry, another similar reddish-purple colored liqueur, or a purple shimmery liqueur to include the sparkle. You can also use apple brandy or another apple liqueur if you use fruit juices instead of apple juice (basically swapping the juice and liquor flavors)
- Apple cider will give you a more cloudy, spiced drink, and apple juice will be more transparent – either works, but it’s your choice. You can also use cranberry or pomegranate juices to change the color and flavor profiles a bit
- The luster dust is technically optional, but it adds a fun potion-like finish to the drink. You can also use edible glitter, or any similar food-grade sparkling additive
- As written, this cocktail is closest in color and flavor to the Bartesian version of a witch’s heart. However, if you prefer a deep purple color (which I think looks even spookier) then you’ll need to add a drop each of red and blue food coloring
- Instead of a maraschino cherry, you can use similar fresh berries that resemble the “heart” shape, like a raspberry or a small strawberry!
How to Make a Witch’s Heart Cocktail
- In a cocktail shaker (or similar), combine the apple vodka, blackberry brandy, apple cider, lemon juice, grenadine, and luster dust (if using) along with a few ice cubes

- Shake until well mixed and chilled, usually about 15-20 seconds, then strain into a martini glass

- Garnish with the maraschino cherry “heart” on a cocktail pick before serving

Recipe FAQs
Why Is The Witch’s Heart Cocktail Popular For Halloween?
The witch’s heart cocktail is popular for Halloween due to its reddish purple coloring and because it resembles a potion or witch’s brew.
The inclusion of dramatic elements like dry ice or glitter makes it a fun and festive drink for themed parties.
Can You Make The Witch’s Heart Cocktail Non-Alcoholic?
Yes, the witch’s heart cocktail can be made into a non-alcoholic mocktail by omitting the vodka and using extra apple juice or cider.
For the blackberry liqueur, try fresh blackberry puree, pomegranate, or cranberry juice as alternatives which achieve a similar color.
How Can You Add A Smoky Effect To The Witch’s Heart Cocktail?
For a smoky effect, bartenders often use dry ice in the witch’s heart cocktail. This creates a fog-like vapor that adds to the cocktail’s mysterious and spooky presentation, making it a hit at Halloween parties.
If you choose to use dry ice, make sure to store it in a well ventilated area, only touch it using tongs, and do not drink from the drink until it has completely evaporated.
Is This Cocktail the Same as the Bartesian Witch’s Heart?
This cocktail recipe is similar to the Bartesian witch’s heart, which is available seasonally around Halloween. It features the same apple and dark berry flavor profile, similar color, and is also made with vodka.
The Bartesian version is slightly lighter in color, but you can always tweak the ingredients a bit if you like. This is a delicious and similar alternative if you don’t have the Bartesian option available.
Recipe Pro Tips For the Best Witch’s Heart Cocktail
- The luster dust naturally settles after a while, so you’ll want to periodically re-stir your witches brew to make it shine at its best!
- As I noted above in the ingredients, this cocktail is naturally a reddish purple color (which is similar to the Bartesian version). If you want a deep purple color for a spookier look, add one drop red and one drop blue food coloring to the mix!
- I find this drink plenty sweet with the ingredients, but you can adjust to taste with some simple syrup or honey if you want a sweeter drink. For a less sweet option, add more lemon juice or use a reduced sugar apple juice

Storage and Serving Tips For a Witch’s Heart Drink
- Since there are no carbonated elements, you can prepare a witch’s heart ahead of time (scale for as many servings as you like), without the grenadine. Store in a pitcher in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Then, pour into individual glasses, top with grenadine, and add the cherry before serving
- While a martini glass is the most common choice for the witches heart cocktail, you can also use a lowball glass of some sort if you don’t have one
