Ingredients List

ingredients to make watermelon martini
  • 2 ounces watermelon vodka
  • 2 ounces watermelon juice
  • ½ ounce fresh lime juice
  • ½ ounce triple sec (or another orange liqueur, like Cointreau)

Ingredient Tips and Substitutions

  • You can use plain or citron flavored vodka if you don’t have watermelon flavored (or cut it to 1 ½ ounce and use ½ ounce watermelon schnapps such as Dekuyper or Pucker for flavoring)! Popular brands of watermelon vodka include Smirnoff, Ciroc, Absolut, and Western Son
  • I usually use prepared watermelon juice (such as Tropicana or Simply Watermelon) for convenience. However, you can puree and strain a fresh watermelon if preferred (it will taste fresher and less sweet that way)!
  • Fresh lime juice is truly best for flavor, but you can use bottled in a pinch. Feel free to substitute lemon juice if preferred for a flavor variation
  • Given the sweetness of the watermelon, I don’t find that a sweetener is needed. However, you can add simple syrup or honey to taste if needed
  • Cosmo variation: Add 1 ounce 100% cranberry juice in place of half the watermelon juice to create a Watermelon Cosmo variation!

Step By Step Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker (or similar) along with a handful of ice cubes

Recipe FAQs

How Do I Make My Own Watermelon Juice?

Cut seedless watermelon into cubes and pulse in a blender until smooth. For a smoother texture juice, strain it through a fine mesh strainer to remove the pulp, then chill until you’re ready to make your martini.

Can I Make A Spicy Version?

Absolutely! Muddle a few slices of fresh jalapeño in your shaker before adding the other ingredients, or garnish with a jalapeño slice. The subtle heat pairs surprisingly well with sweet watermelon and bright citrus.

Can I Make This A Mocktail?

Yes! Simply omit the vodka and replace it with sparkling water, lemonade, club soda, or a non-alcoholic spirit. The triple sec can be swapped for a triple sec syrup, or orange juice. You’ll still have a refreshing watermelon drink that’s perfect for any occasion

Tips For the Best Watermelon Martini

  • If you don’t own a cocktail shaker, you can use something similar like a mason jar with a lid instead
  • This drink is fairly well balanced strength wise, but you can add more vodka to make it stronger, or more watermelon juice to reduce overall strength
  • Sweetness will vary between juice brands (or your specific watermelon if you use fresh puree). Add extra lime juice to balance, or top with a little unsweetened sparkling water or club soda if needed

Serving and Make Ahead

Serving Tips

  • Serve well chilled. A watermelon martini is at its best when it’s ice cold (using pre-chilled ingredients helps a lot too)!
  • Use a chilled martini glass. Pop the glass in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before serving for an extra-refreshing cocktail (with less dilution)!
  • Serve immediately. Martinis are best enjoyed as soon as they’re poured while they’re perfectly chilled
  • Add a Rim. An optional salt or sugared rim (or combination thereof) on your glass can add an elegant look, as well as adding extra sweetness or a salty counterbalance if desired

Make Ahead Tips

  • Blend the watermelon juice in advance (if using fresh watermelon juice). Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days
  • Mix the ingredients ahead of time. Combine the watermelon juice, vodka, liqueur, and citrus juice in a sealed container and refrigerate until you’re ready to serve
  • Shake with ice just before serving. This ensures the martini stays cold and properly diluted without becoming watery
  • Making cocktails for a crowd? Scale up the recipe and keep the mixture chilled in a pitcher, then shake individual servings with ice as guests arrive
  • Watermelon Jello Shots
  • Watermelon Limeade

Final Thoughts

This watermelon martini is a fruity, refreshing, and delicious vodka martini that’s perfect for summer! Flavors of sweet watermelon, tart lime, and a hint of orange make for a well balanced, fruit forward sip.

I love to serve them when I have guests over for a cookout or BBQ, but these martinis are equally good for pool parties, girls’ night, or just kicking back and relaxing for happy hour.
