Ingredients List

ingredients to make watermelon lemon drop
  • 2 ounces vodka (plain or watermelon-flavored vodka)
  • 1 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • ½ ounce triple sec
  • ½ ounce simple syrup (optional)
  • 1 ½ ounces watermelon juice (I use Simply Watermelon)

For the Rim:

  • Fresh lemon wedge
  • Granulated sugar (2-3 Tbsp or so)

Ingredient Tips and Substitutions

  • I use watermelon-flavored vodka for more flavor (I have Western Son brand, but Smirnoff, Ciroc, Absolut, and New Amsterdam make one too), but plain or citron flavor are great choices too. Feel free to swap in gin or white rum for a different yet complimentary base alcohol choice
  • Fresh lemon juice is truly best for flavor, but you can use bottled in a pinch
  • Instead of triple sec, you can substitute another orange liqueur, such as Grand Marnier, Cointreau, or similar
  • Prepared watermelon juice like Simply or Tropicana makes things quick and easy (but you can absolutely blend and strain a fresh watermelon too). Feel free to swap in a juice blend, like Ocean Spray cran-watermelon, or a cucumber melon juice like Wonder Melon to create different flavor profiles!

Step By Step Instructions

  1. To rim your martini glass (optional), run a lemon wedge around the outside rim of the glass to wet it. Then, dip the wet edge into a small plate or shallow bowl filled with the granulated sugar, and turn to coat evenly (tap off excess)

Recipe FAQs

Do Lemon And Watermelon Go Together?

Yes! Lemon and watermelon are a classic flavor combination. The bright acidity of lemon balances watermelon’s natural sweetness, creating a refreshing and well-rounded flavor that works especially well in cocktails, lemonades, and summer desserts.

Can I Make A Mocktail Version?

Absolutely. Simply omit the vodka and replace it with sparkling water, lemon-lime soda, or additional watermelon juice. Omit the triple sec, or use a non-alcoholic triple sec syrup. You’ll still get the sweet watermelon flavor and bright citrus notes of the cocktail without the alcohol.

How Do I Make My Own Watermelon Juice?

Making fresh watermelon juice is easy. Add cubed seedless watermelon flesh to a blender and blend until smooth. For a smoother juice, pour it through a fine-mesh strainer to remove any pulp. Use immediately or refrigerate for up to 2 days.

Tips For the Best Watermelon Lemon Drop

  • You can adjust the strength by reducing the vodka to 1 ½ ounces, or add more watermelon juice, or simply add more vodka to taste if you want a stronger sip
  • The simple syrup can be omitted or adjusted to taste, as your personal preferences and the sweetness of the watermelon juice mean that it’s not one size fits all. I usually start without it, and add to taste (it’s easier to add than remove)!

Serving Tips

  • Serve ice cold. A watermelon lemon drop martini is at its best when thoroughly chilled
  • Use fresh juice when possible. Fresh lemon and watermelon juice provides the brightest flavor and color
  • Serve immediately. The fresh fruit flavors are brightest and most refreshing right after mixing!
  • Make ahead. You can juice your lemons and make watermelon juice (if you’re not using bottled) ahead of time (up to 2 days in advance). Store in the refrigerator, then shake with the other ingredients and serve when ready!

Final Thoughts

This watermelon lemon drop martini is one of my favorite summer drinks! It’s sweet thanks to the summery melon, but tart with lemon and citrus, with a kick from smooth vodka to round it out.

Make it by the glass or the pitcher! This cocktail is easy for entertaining, crowd-pleasing, and perfect for summer cookouts, BBQs, and more. You can even make your own watermelon juice with fresh fruit, and serve the rest for your dessert.
