Ingredients List

- 4 hot dogs (I use all beef)
- 4 taco shells (I prefer the stand and stuff for this)
- ½ lb lean ground beef
- ½ ounce low sodium taco seasoning
- ½ cup refried beans
- ¼ cup pico de gallo
- ¼ cup salsa con queso
- 2 Tbsp chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
- 2 Tbsp pickled jalapeno slices (optional)
- Lettuce or shredded cabbage (optional)
Ingredient Tips and Substitutions
- Any type of hot dogs you like work fine, and chorizo dogs are another great choice here! Feel free to add in some cooked bacon for extra flavor too!
- You can use flour tortillas or other types of taco shells as well (they just won’t stand upright in your air fryer), and you can also serve this recipe on hot dog buns instead if preferred!
- Instead of ground beef, you could use ground turkey or chicken as well (swap in a chicken taco seasoning mix for those)
- I use a pre-made taco seasoning but you can do homemade too (make sure to get a low or no salt variety, as it gets salty quickly with the hot dogs)!
- All of the toppings and fillings are entirely customizable! Add or remove as desired, swap queso for crumbled cotija or shredded Mexican cheese, add some spice, lime, corn, or any other toppings you want to the mix!
Step By Step Instructions
- Add the ground beef to a skillet over medium-high heat on the stove (or a hot plate) and brown. Add in the taco seasoning and ⅛ cup water, and cook, breaking up the meat into very small pieces, for 5-7 minutes until there’s no pink left and the liquid evaporates. A ground meat chopper or potato masher work well for getting rid of lumps! Tip: if you don’t have a stove, you can also do this in the air fryer. Season the meat and cook for 5-6 minutes at 400°F, pausing halfway through to break it up again

- Place your hot dogs into your air fryer in a single layer, allowing air space between them. Cook on the air fry setting at 400°F for 4 minutes

- While the hot dogs are cooking, grab your taco shells and spread about â…› cup refried beans into the base of each one

- After the hot dogs have cooked for 4 minutes, remove them from the air fryer, add them into the taco shells on top of the beans, and return to the air fryer. Cook an additional 2-3 minutes at 400°F, until the dogs are browned to your liking and the shells are toasted

- Spoon the taco meat mixture evenly over the hot dogs, then finish with a drizzle of queso, scoop of pico de gallo, cilantro, jalapenos, and lettuce if desired. Enjoy!

Recipe FAQs
What Is A Taco Hot Dog?
A taco hot dog is a fusion dish that combines a classic grilled hot dog with the bold, zesty flavors of a taco. It’s served in a taco shell, tortilla, or bun, and topped with you favorite classic taco toppings.
What Toppings Go Well On A Taco Dog?
Great toppings for a taco dog include seasoned ground beef or turkey, shredded cheese or queso, salsa or pico de gallo, sour cream or crema, shredded lettuce, diced white onion, sliced jalapeños (fresh or pickled), avocado or guacamole, or any other taco topping favorites!
What’s The Difference Between A Hot Dog And A Taco?
A hot dog is traditionally served in a soft bun and features a frankfurter as the main filling, paired with condiments like ketchup and mustard. A taco, on the other hand, is usually made with a tortilla (soft or hard shell) and filled with a variety of meats, beans, vegetables, and sauces.
A taco hot dog blends the two handhelds into a fun and flavorful hybrid dish!
Tips For the Best Taco Dogs
- You can also cook the hot dogs and the tacos separately if you prefer (rather than joining them together in the last few minutes). This is handy if you’re cooking the hot dogs ahead of time for a quick assembly later
- Times are based on my Ninja Dual Zone air fryer. I do not preheat when I add the hot dogs. Other air fryers can vary slightly in terms of cooking times, so adjust as needed for your specific unit

Storage and Reheating
Storage Tips
- Without Toppings: Store the cooked hot dogs separately in airtight containers in the fridge for up to 4 days
- With Toppings: If already assembled with toppings, wrap each taco dog individually in foil or place in an airtight container. Best if eaten within 1–2 days to avoid sogginess!
- Toppings: Store cold toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, and salsa in separate containers to keep them fresh
Reheating Tips
- Air Fryer: Reheat hot dogs and buns or taco shells at 350°F for 3–5 minutes until warmed through and slightly crispy. Add cold toppings after reheating
- Oven: Wrap in foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10–12 minutes (also add fresh cold toppings after cooking)
- Microwave: Heat the hot dog (without toppings) on a microwave-safe plate for 30–45 seconds. Reassemble with fresh toppings after. Note that, while fast, this method will make your bread or tortilla soggy typically
Final Thoughts
These tasty taco hot dogs are the perfect fusion food between Mexican favorites and American classics. Load your frank up with a crispy taco shell and all your favorite taco toppings, veggies, cheese, and more for a delicious bite.
A hot dog taco is kid friendly, adult approved, and super convenient to make thanks to your air fryer – it’s easy enough for a weeknight! Of course, you could also boil, griddle, grill, or pan fry your franks as well for lots of different options.
