There’s nothing better than a cold, refreshing drink on a hot summer day. My frozen strawberry margarita checks all the boxes, including using seasonal flavors that you’ll love. I prefer to serve it frozen, but if you don’t have a blender, it’s equally delicious on the rocks!

What Are Strawberry Margaritas?
Strawberry margaritas are a fruity, refreshing twist on the classic margarita cocktail, made with tequila, triple sec (or another orange liqueur), fresh or frozen strawberries (or a puree or syrup), and lime juice.
They can be blended with ice for a frozen version or shaken and served over ice (on the rocks) for a more traditional drink (or if you don’t own a blender)!
These margaritas offer the perfect balance of sweet, tart, and boozy flavors — they’re great for celebrating National Margarita Day, Cinco de Mayo, and the ultimate fruity summer sip.

Ingredient Tips and Substitutions
Ingredient Tips and Substitutions
- Blanco or silver tequila is best for these margaritas, but you can experiment with reposado or anejo to create unique flavor profiles!
- Fresh lime juice really makes a big flavor difference, but you can use bottled if that’s all you have
- The agave is optional and largely depends on sweetness preferences as well as how sweet your strawberries are. You can also substitute simple syrup or honey
- Instead of frozen strawberries, you can use fresh berries as well and add a little extra ice to compensate (about ½ cup more). Feel free to experiment with different fruit blends too (blueberries, raspberries, and cherries are a great choice)
- If preferred, you can use strawberry puree or strawberry syrup (like Torani) – ½ ounce is usually good. I prefer this when serving on the rocks to avoid seeds!
- I like a salt rim since the margarita itself here is sweeter thanks to the fruit, but if you like extra sweetness you can do granulated sugar instead of the salt!
Variations
Mocktail
To make a virgin strawberry margarita (for the kids and non-drinkers), omit the tequila, and substitute fresh orange juice for the triple sec. Add a few extra strawberries instead!
For a fizzy finishing touch, feel free to top the drink with sparkling water (Topo Chico is great) or a lemon-lime soda like Sprite for a sweet option!
Spicy
Want a little spice? Add some Tajin to the rim or a few jalapeño slices to your glass before serving for a spicy strawberry margarita!
Step By Step Instructions
- Rim your margarita glass by running the edge of a lime around the outside of the rim. Then, dip the wet edge into a plate or shallow bowl with the margarita salt in it, and turn to coat. Tap off excess

- Add all ingredients to your blender basin

- Pulse or blend on high until it reaches a slushy consistency, about 10-15 seconds (but it can depend on the size of your ice pieces). If you find it too thin, add extra ice or frozen fruit to thicken

- Garnish with a slice of lime and/or a fresh strawberry if desired, and enjoy!

On the Rocks Directions
- Rim your glass and fill it with ice cubes
- Muddle or mash the strawberries in the bottom of the glass (or you can substitute a flavored syrup or puree to avoid the seeds)
- Add all remaining ingredients to a cocktail shaker (or similar – a mason jar with a lid works well) along with a couple ice cubes
- Shake until well chilled and lightly frothy, about 10-15 seconds, then strain into prepared glass

Recipe FAQs
What Tequila Is Best for Strawberry Margaritas?
For strawberry margaritas, blanco (silver) tequila is typically the best choice. It’s fresh, clean, and allows the sweet, fruity flavor of the strawberries to shine without overpowering the drink. A good quality blanco tequila like Espolòn, Casamigos, or Don Julio is ideal.
What Is the Secret Ingredient in Margaritas?
The “secret ingredient” in many great margaritas is often a splash of orange liqueur, like Cointreau, Grand Marnier, or triple sec. It adds a hint of citrus complexity that balances the tartness of the lime and enhances the overall flavor of the cocktail.
What Is the Difference Between a Strawberry Margarita and a Strawberry Daiquiri?
While both are fruity and refreshing, the main difference is the base spirit. A strawberry margarita uses tequila and often includes lime and orange liqueur, while a strawberry daiquiri uses white rum and typically features lime juice and simple syrup.
The flavor profiles are different too — margaritas have a more citrusy, bold kick, while daiquiris are smoother and a bit sweeter.
Tips For the Best Strawberry Margarita
- Typically, one medium lime produces about 1 ounce of fresh juice. Depending on how you want to scale the recipe, this should assist in determining how many limes you need
- For a stronger drink, add more tequila. For a weaker drink, reduce tequila and/or add more ice to balance. Adjust sweetness by adding more or less (including omission) agave as desired! Always start low and add more as needed – it’s easier to add than take away!

Serving Tips and Pitcher Directions
- Glassware. Margarita or coupe glasses are traditional, but mason jars or stemless wine glasses work well for a casual vibe! You can also use a rocks glass for a smaller option (see what that looks like in my Lavender Margarita recipe)!
- Garnishes are optional, but great options include fresh strawberries, a lime wheel, or a fresh mint sprig. For an extra flair, dip the rim in sugar or salt mixed with lime zest!
- To prepare a pitcher for a party, scale for desired number of servings. Mix everything (excluding ice) together in an airtight pitcher and store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Stir, then pour over ice-filled glasses or blend with ice before pouring in glasses when ready to serve
- Watermelon Margarita
