What is a Skull Caprese Salad?

A skull caprese salad is a themed version of the traditional Italian caprese salad, often presented in a spooky or Halloween context. It features the classic ingredients of a caprese salad—mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil.

Instead of a large block of sliced mozzarella, though, this recipe uses smaller pearls melted into a silicone mold until they look like skulls to add an eerie and festive twist. You can use your air fryer, microwave, or even the oven to do the melting (and don’t worry, I’ll give you all the details)!

This simple and spooky caprese salad makes for a perfect appetizer for your Halloween party, adding just the right amount of gruesome to fit in well with your other spooky tricks and treats!

It’s also naturally vegetarian, low carb, and gluten free, so it works for a variety of different dietary needs (but it’s delicious even if you don’t have any)!

Ingredients For Skull Caprese Salad

ingredients to make skull caprese salad
  • 8 ounce package fresh mozzarella cheese pearls
  • 10 ounce package cherry tomatoes, halved (if you can find black cherry tomatoes or another dark color, it adds to the “spooky” effect)
  • ¼ cup fresh basil leaves
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar (or balsamic glaze if you want it sweeter)
  • ¼ tsp salt (or to taste)
  • ⅛ tsp black pepper (or to taste)

Ingredient Tips and Substitutions

  • You could also use a larger block of mozzarella and cut it into small cubes if you can’t find the pearls (but using pearls saves the extra step)
  • I’m using Hiiros cherry tomatoes for their deep red color, but you can use regular cherry or grape tomatoes, small heirloom tomatoes, or Kumatos (which are naturally dark) are a great option if your store has them!
  • Use purple basil instead of the traditional sweet green variety for an even more gothic feel!
  • Feel free to add in other vegetables to your salad if you’d like, such as green onion, garlic, or shallots, or cooked sweet corn! You can also add in Italian seasoning or other herbs if you’d like, in addition to the classic basil

Equipment Notes

  • You only need heat for the purposes of softening the cheese. I usually use my air fryer or microwave, but you can also use a traditional oven if that’s what you’ve got!
  • To make the cheese skulls, you’ll need a silicone mini skull mold (make sure it’s safe to use in whatever you’re heating with). The good news is you can re-use the mold to make themed ice cubes (perfect for my Skull Milk Tea), candies, and chocolates as well (I love multipurpose tools)

How to Make a Skull Caprese Salad

  1. Place one mozzarella pearl in each well of your silicone skull mold
place mozzarella pearl in each skull mold
  1. Heat the cheese for 20-30 seconds on high in the microwave, or at 350°F for 6-8 minutes in a conventional oven, or 3-4 minutes at 350°F in an air fryer. You don’t want it super melty and runny, but rather just soft and pliable
  2. Use a couple paper towels to push down on each softened ball of cheese, pressing it into the mold and absorbing the excess liquid it puts off. The liquid will be hot, so be careful and use a couple layers of paper towel to protect your fingers

  1. Set the molds in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to firm, then press each mold in to pop out the formed ball of cheese

  1. Add the mozzarella skulls and halved cherry tomatoes to a bowl, then gently toss with the olive oil and balsamic vinegar

  1. Transfer to a serving plate or bowl, then top with the salt, pepper, and fresh basil
  2. Enjoy!

Recipe FAQs

What Ingredients Are Typically Used In A Skull Caprese Salad?

The typical ingredients include mozzarella balls (which are softened and pressed in a mold to look like skulls), fresh tomatoes, basil leaves, and a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Some versions may include additional ingredients for decoration, like black olives or herbs.

Can A Skull Caprese Salad Be Made In Advance?

Yes, a skull caprese salad can be prepared in advance, but it’s best to assemble and add liquids just before serving to keep the ingredients fresh.

If making ahead, keep the ingredients separate and store them in the fridge for up to 24 hours until ready to arrange.

What Occasions Are Best Suited For A Skull Caprese Salad?

Skull caprese salads are perfect for Halloween parties, themed dinners, or any event where a spooky or fun presentation is desired.

They can also be a unique dish for potlucks or gatherings that embrace creativity in food presentation.

How Do You Serve A Skull Caprese Salad?

A skull caprese salad can be served as an appetizer or a light side dish.

Arrange it on a platter and allow guests to serve themselves, or plate individual portions for a more formal presentation.

What Variations Can Be Made To A Skull Caprese Salad?

Variations can include adding different herbs, using heirloom or cherry tomatoes for color, or incorporating different types of cheese.

You can also try different types of vinegar (red or black varieties work best) to enhance the spooky theme.

How Do You Make The Mozzarella Look Like Skulls In A Skull Caprese Salad?

The easiest (and quickest) method to make the mozzarella look like skulls is to use a silicone mold. Heat and press the mozzarella, then cool and pop them out for perfect skulls!

As an alternative, you could also gently carve or decorate the cheese with edible markers to resemble skulls, but this is tedious and not as uniform in appearance.

Recipe Pro Tips For the Best Skull Caprese Salad

  • If your cheese does melt (instead of just softening) it’s alright. Use a toothpick as needed to separate any that has run together back into individual molds. Cool for a minute or two before dabbing the liquid up and pressing the molds, or else the paper towel will stick to the molten cheese
  • Note that if you use the air fryer to soften the cheese, it will brown the cheese slightly. It doesn’t affect it other than visually
  • My preferred method is the microwave since it’s quick, and my times are based on a 1000W microwave

Storage and Serving Tips For a Skull Caprese Salad

  • You can make the skulls up to a day in advance and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to use. Then, just toss with the rest of the ingredients before serving!
  • While caprese salad is best enjoyed fresh, you can refrigerate leftovers for 1-2 days and enjoy it cold

Final Thoughts

This skull caprese salad is such a fun, spooky twist on the traditional Italian dish. With fun skull shaped mozzarella, this recipe is one of my favorite appetizers to make for Halloween festivities!

It’s also naturally low carb, gluten free, and vegetarian, so it works with a variety of different dietary needs, which I always love to have as an option when cooking for others.

You can even prepare the cheese a day in advance to save on prep time (especially if you need to cook in batches, depending how many molds you have). That makes it even easier to just toss and serve! It’s the perfect addition for your next Halloween party!
