Ingredients Needed

- 6-oz box green apple Jello (divided) – note that if you use Sonic brand, it’s a 3.94-ounce box, so you can use ⅔ the amount of other ingredients for a single box, or use two boxes, and each use 1 ½ cups boiling water, then ¾ cup each cold water and vodka (this will make more, closer to 30 shots)
- 3 cups water, divided
- 1 cup apple vodka, divided
- ¼ tsp black gel food coloring
- 24 2-ounce Jello shot cups
Ingredient Tips and Substitutions
- You could also use a different green Jello like lime, but the color and flavor will be different. Try a red variety for a red poison apple variation!
- You can also use plain vodka instead of apple flavored, or substitute a light or spiced rum, apple brandy, sour apple pucker schnapps, Crown apple whiskey, or anything similar. You can use leftovers in my Caramel Apple Jello Shots!
- Black gel food coloring gives the most intense black color, but you can also use liquid drops (or red, blue, and green mixed together works too). For a natural alternative, squid ink works (but will give a briny note)!
Step By Step Instructions
- Boil 1 cup of water in a microwave safe bowl or large measuring cup (I do about 2 minutes in a 1000W microwave; you can also use a kettle or pot on the stovetop). Stir or whisk in 3 ounces (half the 6-ounce box) of Jello into the hot water, mixing until fully dissolved

- Pour in ½ cup cold water and ½ cup of the vodka, stir until mixed

- Add the green Jello mixture into the base of your plastic cups – they should be filled about halfway full. I place my cups on a cookie sheet to catch drips and to make transferring to the fridge quick and easy

- Refrigerate around 4 hours, or until firm to the touch (Jello naturally jiggles, but it shouldn’t stick to your finger). Time can vary based on specific thickness, your fridge, humidity, and more. Feel free to leave them in overnight if you’re making ahead
- Boil the second cup of water, then stir in the remaining 3 ounces of Jello and the black food coloring, stirring again until fully dissolved. Add in the remaining ½ cup cold water and ½ cup of vodka and mix

- Carefully pour the black layer on top of the green gelatin mixture, filling the remainder of the cup (leave a little head space for the lid to snap on), then refrigerate another 4 hours, or until firm

- Decorate with Halloween sprinkles or candies if desired, and enjoy!

Recipe FAQs
Can I Make This Recipe Kid Friendly?
Yes! Just leave out the alcohol and replace it with extra cold water or apple juice. You’ll still get the same spooky look and fun flavor without the booze.
What Is The Best Alcohol To Put In Jello Shots?
Vodka is the most popular choice because it blends well with any flavor. Rum, tequila, or flavored liqueurs can also work if you want to add a unique twist.
What Is The Ratio Of Alcohol To Water In Jello Shots?
The most common ratio is 1 cup boiling water, ½ cup cold water, and ½ cup alcohol per 3-ounce box of Jello. This keeps the shots firm enough to set while still delivering a kick.
You can go as high as ¾ cup vodka and ¼ cup cold water, but if you put too much liquor in, your Jello might not set.
Tips For the Best Poison Apple Jello Shots
- Make sure to let the first layer fully set before adding the second to give you stripes. If you don’t, the two will blend together and the black will overtake the entire shot
- These shots can easily be prepared a few days in advance and stored in the fridge. Add any toppings or edible decorations just before serving

Storage and Serving
Storage Tips
- Keep Refrigerated: Store covered in the refrigerator until ready to serve; they’ll last about a week before they start to dry out
- Use Lids or Wrap: If making ahead, cover with plastic wrap or use cups with lids to prevent them from drying out or taking on fridge flavors
- Avoid Freezing: Freezing changes the texture of gelatin and makes shots watery once thawed
Serving Tips
- Loosen Before Serving: Run a butter knife around the edge or briefly dip the bottom of the cup in warm water for easy removal. You can also serve with small spoons if preferred
- Add Garnish Right Before: Candy eyes, gummy worms, apple slices, or edible glitter should be added just before serving so they stay fresh!
- Themed Trays: Arrange them on black or silver platters with spiderweb doilies, dry ice, or faux moss for a haunted vibe
- Light It Up: Serve on a tray with LED tea lights or underlighting to make the colors glow!
