Ingredients List

ingredients to make pistachio mai tai
  • 1 oz Jamaican (or white) rum
  • 1 oz dark rum
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • ½ oz orange curacao or orange liqueur
  • ½ oz pistachio orgeat

Ingredient Tips and Substitutions

  • I use Appleton Jamaican rum, but any white or light rum is fine for the base of the drink. For the dark rum, I had Kraken on hand, but any similar dark or spiced rum works!
  • Fresh lime juice truly makes a difference, but you can use bottled if absolutely necessary (I just don’t think it’s nearly as good)
  • Traditionally, this drink is made with orange curacao, which can be hard to find. Cointreau orange liqueur is another popular choice, or Grand Marnier, O3, or triple sec also work
  • Juice Variation. A Mai Tai actually does not normally contain pineapple juice, but it is a popular variation which helps to cut the strength of the drink. If desired, add 1-2 ounces of pineapple or pineapple-orange juice to taste

Step By Step Instructions

  1. Fill a tiki glass (or similar) with crushed ice (small cubes or nuggets work too)
  2. Add all ingredients except dark rum to a cocktail shaker (or similar) along with a handful of ice cubes

  • Pineapple Upside-Down Cake – Bright, caramelized pineapple enhances the drink’s citrus and rum base without overpowering it
  • White Chocolate Pistachio Bark – Creamy sweetness highlights the pistachio flavor and softens the cocktail’s acidity

Savory Snacks

  • Salted Nuts Or Pistachio Mix – A simple, salty contrast that reinforces the pistachio element without competing flavors
  • Prosciutto-Wrapped Melon – Sweet, juicy melon balances the rum and citrus while the savory prosciutto keeps things grounded
  • Crispy Coconut Shrimp – Crunchy, lightly sweet, and tropical – this pairing feels made for tiki-style cocktails. Try my Air Fryer Frozen Coconut Shrimp for a simple option!

  • Hawaiian Sliders – Sweet rolls and savory fillings complement the cocktail’s fruity rum profile. Try my Air Fryer Ham and Cheese Sliders!

Recipe FAQs

What Is A Mai Tai Made Of?

A classic Mai Tai first created by Trader Vic is made with rum (often a blend), lime juice, orange curaçao, and almond orgeat syrup. It’s known for balancing bright citrus with nutty sweetness and rich rum flavor.

Which Alcohol Goes With Pistachio?

Pistachio pairs especially well with rum, vodka, amaretto, and even tequila thanks to its naturally sweet, nutty profile. These spirits complement pistachio without overpowering its delicate flavor.

What Are Some Common Mistakes In Making A Mai Tai?

Using bottled sour mix or juice instead of fresh lime juice is the most common mistake and flattens the flavor. Another issue is over-sweetening, which can mask the rum and orgeat rather than letting them shine.

Tips For the Best Pistachio Mai Tai

  • This drink is fairly well balanced in terms of sweetness, but for a sweeter option, you can add extra orgeat, or some fruit juice to your tastes
  • A Mai Tai is naturally a strong drink based on the ratio of mixers to alcohol in it, which is why adding tropical juices has become a common variation (but this is again entirely up to your personal tastes)

Serving and Presentation

  • Glassware. Serve in a rocks glass or tiki-style glass to stay true to classic Mai Tai vibes!
  • Garnishes. Beyond the classic mint and lime, you can add a maraschino cherry for a pop of color and sweetness, or some crushed pistachios or a pistachio rim to highlight the nutty twist!
  • Make Ahead. Scale as desired and mix everything except the dark rum and ice in advance and refrigerate. Add ice, dark rum float, and garnishes when ready to serve in individual glasses
  • Pistachio Pudding Shots
  • Pistachio Old Fashioned

Final Thoughts

This pistachio Mai Tai is such a fun riff on the classic tiki drink. Of course, it still features the classic mix of rum, fresh lime, and orange liqueur, but swaps the traditional almond for a pistachio orgeat, which adds a smooth, nutty vibe that pairs perfectly with the tropical flavors.

You can customize it just the way you like, from using different rums to adding fruit juices to tone the drink down. From beachside sips to summer cookouts, and even in winter thanks to the nutty pistachio notes, it’s a year round drink that everyone can enjoy.
