Ingredients List

- 3.94 oz box Sonic green apple Jello
- ¾ cup apple flavored vodka
- 2 ¼ cups tonic water, divided
- Gummy worms (the sugar-coated variety works better)
- Gummy bug candy
- Spider sprinkles
- 20 Jello shot cups (or similar)
Ingredient Tips and Substitutions
- You can also use lime Jello if preferred. Note that Sonic Jello is slightly larger than a standard 3-ounce box of Jello. You can absolutely use a regular-sized box of another brand, but you’ll want to adjust down to ½ cup vodka, 1 ½ cups water and 14 or so shot cups instead
- Instead of apple vodka, you can use plain vodka, or swap in tequila (which is great with lime flavored Jello)
- Tonic water glows under a blacklight, which is what makes it a great choice for these shots! However, you can use regular water instead if you’re not planning to serve on a blacklight
- The mix-ins and toppings are super customizable. I use some Great Value gummy worms, Trolli sour brite squad, and Frankford lightning bug gummies, along with spider sprinkles, but use whatever you can find/like! The gummy worms in the Jello work best with sugar-coated ones as they hold shape better. The flavor will meld with the Jello though either way, so make sure to use a complimentary flavor!
- For extra theming, you can use a dry erase marker to draw Oogie Boogie faces on your plastic shot cups if you like!
Step By Step Instructions
- Boil 1 ½ cups of tonic water. Add it to a large microwave-safe mixing bowl or measuring cup, and heat until bubbling all over, at least 212°F (this takes me about 3 ½ minutes on high in a 1000W microwave). You could also use a kettle or heat it on your stovetop. Add the green apple Jello mix (add it slowly, as it bubbles more than plain water would), and stir or whisk until fully dissolved

- Stir in ¾ cup of apple vodka and the remaining ¾ cup of cold tonic water, mixing until fully combined

- Pour the green Jello mixture into your portion cups, filling about ½ to ⅔ full, then add a gummy worm to each one (top them off if needed, but you should still have a little head space so the lids don’t leave imprints). I like to place them on a baking sheet to catch drips and make moving them easier

- Cover and transfer the Jello shots to your refrigerator until set (about 4 hours, but overnight is great too)
- Top with more bug gummies, sprinkles, and/or other edible decor just before serving. Enjoy!

Recipe FAQs
How Far In Advance Can I Make Jello Shots For A Party?
Jello shots can typically be made 1-3 days ahead of time and stored covered in the refrigerator. This makes them a great make-ahead party treat, especially for holidays and themed events. Wait to add any garnishes until shortly before serving for the best presentation.
Can I Make These Without Alcohol?
Absolutely! Simply replace the alcohol with cold water, apple juice, lemon-lime soda, or another complementary beverage. You’ll still get the fun green apple flavor and spooky appearance without the booze.
What Is The Ratio Of Vodka To Jello For Jello Shots?
A common ratio is 1 cup boiling water and 1 cup vodka for a standard 3-ounce box of Jello. Some recipes replace part of the vodka with cold water to create a firmer texture and a milder alcohol flavor.
The exact ratio can vary depending on how strong you want the shots and how well you need them to set.
Tips For the Best Oogie Boogie Jello Shots
- The exact number of cups you’ll need depends exactly how full you fill them. I usually grab 1-2 extra to make sure I have enough!
- It’s fine if the gummy worms stick out of the Jello in the cups, as long as you can still get the lids on
- Sugar covered gummy worms melt into the Jello the least. If you have regular ones, you can either let the Jello cool slightly first, or you can skip adding the worms to the cups and just add them on top after
- If your cups don’t have lids, place the cups on a tray and cover with plastic wrap to prevent fridge odor transfer

Storage and Serving
Storage Tips
- Keep refrigerated. Jello shots should stay chilled until you’re ready to serve them
- Cover tightly. Use lids or plastic wrap to prevent them from drying out or absorbing refrigerator odors
- Make ahead friendly. Prepare them up to 3 days in advance for easy party planning!
- Store garnishes separately. Add sprinkles, candy decorations, or other toppings just before serving for the best appearance
- Keep them level. Store the cups on a flat surface so the Jello sets evenly
- Don’t freeze them. Freezing can affect the texture and cause the Jello to separate once thawed
Serving Tips
- Serve cold. Oogie Boogie Jello shots taste best straight from the refrigerator!
- Lean into the Halloween theme. Display them on a spooky serving tray surrounded by plastic spiders, mini pumpkins, other Halloween treats, or Halloween decorations
- Keep them chilled during parties. If serving outdoors or at a long event, place the tray over ice to help them stay firm
- Label alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions. If you’re serving both, make it easy for guests to tell them apart!
Extra Party Tip
For the ultimate Halloween presentation, place the Jello shot cups on a black serving tray and surround them with dry ice effects (used safely and separately from the food) or battery-operated blacklights to create an eerie Oogie Boogie-inspired glow!

Add in all sorts of fun creepy crawlies like gummy worms, spider sprinkles, and other frightening delights to really add to the theme! These Jello shots are easy to make ahead, and perfect for Halloween, themed movie nights, fall parties, and more.
