Add a festive holiday twist to a classic cocktail with this frosted mistletoe margarita recipe! It’s everything you love about a margarita – lime, orange, and tequila, but with the addition of cranberry juice and sugared cranberry garnish for a Christmas inspired twist!

What is a Frosted Mistletoe Margarita?
A frosted mistletoe margarita is a festive holiday twist on the classic margarita, blending tequila with bright cranberry flavors, lime, and sweet orange liqueur.
The “frosted” appearance comes from the use of a sugar-rimmed glass, and a topping of sugared cranberries, making this drink visually striking and ideal for holiday and Christmas celebrations!
Of course, you can add extra finishing touches like rosemary or fresh lime slices to add a classic red and green color contrast.

This cranberry margarita can be served on the rocks (with ice cubes) or frozen and blended (a frozen margarita), and is equally easy to prepare by the glass or the pitcher, making it perfect for holiday parties and seasonal entertaining.

Ingredients Needed

- 2 ounces tequila (silver or blanco)
- 3 ounces cranberry juice (100% unsweetened)
- 1 ounce triple sec
- 1 ounce lime juice (fresh is best)
- ½ ounce agave syrup (or to taste)
For the Rim
- Fresh lime wedge
- Granulated sugar (about 1 Tbsp)
Garnishes (Optional)
- Fresh rosemary sprigs
- Sugared cranberries (fresh cranberries, lime juice, and sugar)
Ingredient Tips and Substitutions
- You can use cranberry cocktail instead of 100% cranberry juice if you want a sweeter drink. I prefer to start more tart and adjust to taste. Feel free to substitute white cranberry juice as well, but note that the drink will no longer be red (more of a pale pink color)
- The triple sec can be swapped for Cointreau or another orange liquor
- Instead of agave you can use simple syrup or honey instead
- While I prefer sugar for the rim in this case, you can also use kosher salt, or a mix if you prefer
How to Make Quick Sugared Cranberries
I use the “quick method” to make sugared cranberries for this recipe. It won’t hold up as long as the traditional method, but I find it perfectly fine for a quick cocktail garnish (and you don’t need to wait for them to dry for hours this way).
- Rinse and dry about ½ cup of fresh cranberries
- Toss the berries with 1-2 Tbsp fresh lime juice to coat
- Add ¼ cup granulated sugar to a plate or shallow bowl
- Roll the wet berries into the sugar until they are totally coated
- Garnish your drinks!
How to Make a Frosted Mistletoe Margarita
- Rim your glass by running a lime wedge around the rim of the glass, then dipping the wet edge into a plate or shallow bowl filled with granulated sugar. Fill your glass with ice

- To a cocktail shaker (or similar) add the tequila, cranberry juice, triple sec, and lime juice, along with a couple ice cubes

- Shake until well chilled and lightly frothy, about 20-30 seconds, then strain the mixture into rimmed glass

- Garnish with a sprig of fresh rosemary and some sugared cranberries. Enjoy!

Frozen Margarita Option
- Add all ingredients to a blender with about 1 cup of crushed ice
- Blend on high until a slushy consistency is achieved
- Add extra ice if needed to achieve a thicker consistency
- Pour into prepared glasses, garnish, and enjoy!
Food Pairing Suggestions
A mistletoe margarita pairs beautifully with a variety of foods, especially those with complementary flavors and textures that balance its tart, citrusy, and slightly sweet profile. Here are some of my favorite pairing suggestions:
Appetizers
- Guacamole and Chips: The creamy avocado and salty tortilla chips contrast well with the bright margarita flavors
- Bruschetta with Cranberry Relish: Adds a festive touch while echoing the cranberry notes in the drink
- Cheese Platter: Soft cheeses like brie or goat cheese paired with dried fruits and nuts complement the margarita’s tanginess. Try my cranberry baked brie for the perfect combo!
Main Dishes
- Tacos: Particularly chicken or fish tacos with a hint of spice or citrus. Try my air fryer Mahi Mahi Fish Tacos for the perfect crunchy bite!
- Grilled Shrimp Skewers: The light, smoky flavor of the shrimp pairs beautifully with the margarita’s tart and fruity profile
- Holiday Glazed Ham: A sweet and savory option that complements the cranberry elements!
Desserts
- Cranberry-Lime Bars: Their tart sweetness mirrors the margarita’s flavors perfectly
- White Chocolate Bark: Especially with dried cranberries and pistachios for a festive, colorful touch. My Microwave White Chocolate Pistachio Bark is perfect!
- Frozen Yogurt or Sorbet: Citrus or berry flavors keep the palate refreshed
Recipe FAQs
What Is the Best Tequila to Use for Margaritas?
The best tequila for margaritas is typically 100% agave blanco or silver tequila because of its smooth, clean flavor that pairs well with the citrus and sweetness in the drink. Brands like Patrón, Don Julio, and Espolón are popular choices.
Reposado tequila, aged in barrels, or smoky Mezcal tequila can add richer, more complex flavors if preferred. Avoid mixto tequilas, which contain added sugars and can result in a less refined taste.
Are Frozen Margaritas More Alcoholic?
Frozen margaritas are not necessarily more alcoholic than on-the-rocks versions; it depends on the ratio of ingredients. Since frozen margaritas are blended with ice, they may seem lighter due to the dilution, but the alcohol content is determined by the recipe.
If more ice is used in blending, the perceived strength may be reduced.
How Do You Keep Margaritas Frozen for a Party?
To keep margaritas frozen for a party, store them in an insulated container, such as a thermos or an ice-filled cooler.
Alternatively, prepare the margaritas in advance and freeze them in large batches, stirring occasionally to maintain slush consistency. When serving, use frozen glasses, keep extra ice on hand, and ensure your blender is ready for quick refreezing if needed.
What Is a Margarita Without Ice Called?
A margarita without ice is called a straight-up margarita or a neat margarita. In this version, the cocktail is shaken with ice and then strained into a glass without ice, resulting in a smoother, undiluted presentation.
It’s a great option for those who want a classic margarita experience without any chill from the ice.
Tips For the Best Mistletoe Margarita
- Fresh lime juice makes all the difference (but you can use bottled if you absolutely have to). One medium lime usually generates 1 ounce of fresh lime juice for reference, especially when scaling the recipe!
- While a margarita glass is always a good choice, this margarita can also be served in a martini glass, coupe, stemless wine glass, rocks glass, or anything similar
- Once the sugared cranberries hit the liquid of the drink the sugar will dissolve. Feel free to overpack your ice, or add some non-sugared cranberries underneath to lift the sugared ones up to preserve their look!

Make Ahead and Storage Tips
- While it’s best to serve your margaritas fresh, you can mix everything except the ice in a pitcher up to 24 hours in advance. Store in the fridge until ready to serve, then stir and pour into individual ice-filled glasses
- To make a large batch, simply scale up the ingredients for the desired number of servings. If you plan to serve it frozen, blend in batches, adjusting the ice until you reach the desired consistency
- Salted Caramel Margarita
- Amaretto Orange Margarita
