Ingredient Tips and Substitutions

  • You can cook as many servings at a time as you want, so long as they fit in your air fryer in a single layer (without needing to adjust the time)
  • This recipe also works for other regular Margaritaville breaded shrimp, like Calypso coconut, Baja Buffalo, beer battered, Mexican street corn, and tortilla crusted (the non-breaded flavors cook a little faster, and extra large options like Volcano shrimp take a minute or two longer)
  • The Boomerang shrimp comes with a creamy garlic sauce already for tossing or dipping the shrimp in. However, you can add other sauces as desired!

Step By Step Instructions

  1. Remove frozen shrimp from all packaging and place into your air fryer’s basket or rack in a single layer. Cook in batches if needed; overcrowding will cause wet spots and uneven cooking

  1. Cook on the air fry setting at 400°F for 5 minutes, then gently flip the shrimp or shake the basket and cook an additional 3-5 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 145°F internally and breading is golden brown and crispy. You can add an additional minute or two after they reach temperature for an extra-crispy exterior
  2. Rest shrimp for a couple minutes while you thaw the sauce packet under cool water. Toss the shrimp in the sauce, or serve on the side for dipping (I recommend on the side; the breading falls off easily). Enjoy!

Recipe FAQs

What Is Boomerang Shrimp?

Boomerang shrimp is a Margaritaville appetizer featuring large shrimp coated in seasoned breading and fried until golden and crispy. It’s known for its bold flavor, crunchy texture, and signature dipping sauce.

Is The Shrimp At Margaritaville Breaded Or Fried?

At Margaritaville, there are multiple shrimp dishes, offering both breaded and pan fried options. Boomerang shrimp are breaded and then deep-fried until crispy on the outside and tender inside. The breading gives them that signature crunch and flavor.

Why Is Margaritaville So Popular?

Margaritaville is popular for its laid-back, tropical atmosphere inspired by Jimmy Buffett and his island-themed music. The brand combines fun vacation vibes, comfort food, and beachy cocktails, making it a go-to spot for relaxed, feel-good dining.

Tips For the Best Margaritaville Boomerang Shrimp

  • There is no need to add any oil before cooking, as these shrimp are pre-cooked with it in the batter already
  • Cooking times are based on my Ninja air fryer without preheating – if you do preheat, you can usually drop 1-2 minutes of cooking time. Other air fryers can vary slightly, so adjust as needed in small increments of time
  • The breading fall off the shrimp pretty easily, so I recommend being gentle when flipping and removing them from the air fryer, and that’s also why I prefer to keep the sauce separate

Storage and Reheating

Storage Tips

  • Cool completely first – Let the shrimp cool before storing to prevent condensation, which can make the coating soggy
  • Refrigerate in an airtight container – Store in the fridge for up to 3 days, with a paper towel in the bottom of the container to absorb moisture. Do not refreeze
  • Keep sauce separately – For best results, keep the sauce on the side only add it to what you plan to eat

Reheating Tips

  • Air fryer (best method) – Reheat at 350–375°F for 3–5 minutes until hot and crispy. This restores the crunch better than any other method!
  • Conventional oven option – Spread on a baking sheet and heat at 400°F for about 6–8 minutes, flipping halfway through
  • Avoid the microwave – It will warm the shrimp but soften the crispy coating significantly

Margaritaville Boomerang Shrimp Review

Looking for a review of the Margaritaville Boomerang shrimp? Here’s my thoughts on them. Of course, I cooked them in my Ninja air fryer, which did in fact deliver a nice crispy exterior to the breading!

My shrimp were perfectly cooked temperature-wise after 8 minutes total, but I actually prefer to overcook them a bit – an extra 2-3 minutes helps make the outside even crispier, without making the shrimp too rubbery.

The biggest drawback to these frozen breaded shrimp is that the breading falls off really easily (especially when compared to, say, frozen popcorn shrimp, they’re much flimsier). I think this is because the breading is so thick, so you need to be gentle with flipping and I recommend not tossing in the sauce because they just start to fall apart.

Speaking of the sauce, it delivers on the promise of being creamy and very garlicky. It has a similar flavor profile to bang bang sauce, but heavier on the garlic. Spice wise, it’s not overly spicy; somewhere between a mild and medium buffalo sauce in terms of heat level I’d say.

The breading to me almost feels like it has some cornmeal notes, but there’s no cornmeal in it. Definitely a unique flavor.

Overall? I’d definitely eat them again, but absolutely keep the sauce on the side and crisp them an extra few minutes for best results. They’d be perfect on sandwiches, tacos, or in wraps too, and you could use the sauce as a “dressing”!

Final Thoughts

These air fryer Margaritaville Boomerang shrimp come out crispy and delicious in under 10 minutes! They’re perfect for an appetizer or snack anytime, paired with the included creamy garlic sauce or another of your choice.

I also love to add them to other dishes, like wraps, burritos, sandwiches, or tacos to make a quick and easy meal! Whether it’s game day, entertaining, or just a convenient lunch option, you can’t go wrong.

Plus, you don’t have to leave your house to enjoy the classic Margaritaville restaurant flavors (unfortunately no beach included here, though)!
