Ingredients List

- 2 ounces high quality vodka (I use Tito’s)
- ½ ounce triple sec
- 1 ounce fresh lemon juice
- ½ ounce simple syrup (or to taste)
- 1 Tbsp granulated sugar (for the rim)
- 1 fresh lemon wedge (for the rim)
Ingredient Tips and Substitutions
- The vodka flavor will be prominent in this cocktail, so use one you really like. Tito’s, Grey Goose, and Ciroc are some good options, but choose your favorite mid tier to premium vodka (a really cheap vodka may be too harsh and throw off the balance in this drink). You can use plain, or a citron flavored vodka for extra citrus flavor
- While triple sec is traditional, you can substitute Cointreau, Grand Marnier, or another orange liqueur of choice if desired. Limoncello can also be swapped in for a bolder lemon flavor
- Fresh lemon juice is truly best. You can use bottled in a pinch, but it can be dull, more sour, or even bitter – fresh juice makes all the difference in a simple cocktail like this
- A sugar rim is technically optional, but it is traditional and helps to additionally offset the tartness. If you omit the rim, you may want to add more simple syrup to adjust the sweetness. Feel free to add a little grated lemon zest to your sugar for extra citrus flavor!
Step By Step Instructions
- Rim a chilled martini glass by first running a wedge of fresh lemon on the outside rim of the glass to wet it. Then, turn the glass upside down and dip the wet edge into a plate or shallow bowl with the granulated sugar, turning to evenly coat

- Add all the remaining ingredients to a cocktail shaker, along with a handful of ice cubes

- Shake until well chilled and lightly frothy, about 20-30 seconds, then strain into prepared glass

- Garnish with a slice of lemon or twist of lemon peel if desired, and enjoy!

Recipe FAQs
What Is A Lemon Drop Martini?
A lemon drop martini is a bright, citrusy cocktail made with vodka, fresh lemon juice, orange liqueur (like Cointreau or triple sec), and simple syrup. It’s typically served in a sugar-rimmed martini glass and is known for its sweet-tart, refreshing flavor.
What Makes A Lemon Drop Martini A Martini?
Though it’s quite different from the classic gin martini, the lemon drop is served in the same style of glass and uses vodka as the base spirit. Its presentation, spirit-forward recipe, and elegant balance make it part of the broader “martini” family of cocktails.
How Is A Lemon Drop Martini Different From A Lemon Drop Shot?
A lemon drop martini is a full cocktail served in a martini glass, meant to be sipped, while a lemon drop shot is a small, quick shooter often made with similar ingredients but in a much more concentrated, sugary form. The martini version highlights the fresh citrus more delicately.
Cointreau vs Triple Sec?
Both are orange liqueurs that work well in a lemon drop. Cointreau has a smoother, more refined flavor with balanced sweetness and a slightly higher alcohol content, while triple sec is less expensive and has a sharper citrus note.
Either can be used, but Cointreau is often preferred for a more polished cocktail.
Tips For the Best Lemon Drop Martini
- You can always add more simple syrup afterwards if you want a sweeter drink – remember to start with the base and work up for personal preference. It’s easier to add more than to try and dilute out an overly sweet drink
- A chilled glass helps keep the drink colder longer, without the need to add ice and dilute it (perfect on a hot summer day)!
- As written, this drink is on the stronger side due to the ratio of alcohol to mixers. You can reduce the vodka to 1 ½ ounces, or add lemonade to cut the strength
- No cocktail shaker? Use a mason jar with a lid or something similar to that instead!

Serving and Make Ahead
Presentation Tips
- Glassware. While a martini glass is by far the most common option for a lemon drop martini, you can also use a coupe, white wine glass, or a lowball glass of choice instead
- While garnishes are optional, a lemon wheel, lemon twist, or a sprig of fresh herbs like mint or basil can add a nice finishing touch
Make Ahead and Storage
- You can squeeze your lemons and mix the base cocktail up to 24 hours in advance (feel free to scale for desired number of servings for a party). Store in a pitcher in the refrigerator until ready to serve, then rim individual glasses, pour, and enjoy!
- Most medium lemons produce about 1 ½ ounces of fresh juice when squeezed (though it can of course vary). So, I’d estimate about 1 lemon needed per desired serving of lemon drop
Final Thoughts
This lemon drop martini is the perfect blend of sweet, tart, strong, and sippable, all in one easy to make cocktail. Its bright citrus flavor is widely appealing, and it’s perfect for any season or occasion.
Serve them for bridal showers, girls night, movie night, cookouts, happy hour, warm summer nights, or even at an elegant event! You can customize the balance just to your liking, and dress it up or down with different glassware and garnishes. This lemon martini recipe is incredibly versatile!
