Ingredients List

ingredients to make kielbasa and pierogies
  • 14 ounces kielbasa sausage, sliced into approximately ½” thick rounds
  • 12 count box frozen pierogies (such as Mrs T’s)
  • ½ sweet onion, sliced into thin strips (optional)
  • 1 Tbsp melted butter or olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste (I use ½ tsp and ¼ tsp respectively)

Ingredient Tips and Substitutions

  • Regular or turkey kielbasa is fine (and you can also substitute smoked sausage if preferred)
  • You can use regular size or mini pierogies. The mini ones cook a little faster so you don’t need to pre-cook them for a few minutes (you can add everything all at once). I use classic potato and cheese flavor, but you can try any variety you like (I also like jalapeno cheddar)!
  • I like adding onions, but they’re not going to caramelize the same way they will pan cooking them if that’s what you envision. If you want some roasted onions, add them (or substitute bell peppers), or feel free to caramelize onions low and slow on your stove and add them after cooking
  • You can absolutely add other seasonings and spices if you like – garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika are other good options!
  • Toppings are all optional, but sour cream or mustard are common additions if you like, or a drizzle of hot honey for some sweet heat!

Step By Step Instructions

  1. Add the frozen pierogies to your air fryer’s basket or rack in a single layer (I face them the same way so I can tell which ones I’ve flipped easier later), then air fry at 400°F for 5 minutes

  1. Once the pierogies have cooked for 5 minutes, flip them, and add the sliced kielbasa into the basket as well. Reduce the heat to 375°F (or 380°F depending on available settings) and cook for another 3 minutes

  1. While that’s cooking, toss the sliced onions with the butter or oil, plus the salt and pepper. Stir the pierogies and kielbasa, then add the onions. Cook an additional 10 minutes, stirring once, or until the onions are tender and the kielbasa is caramelized to your liking

Recipe FAQs

Does Kielbasa Go With Pierogies?

Yes! Kielbasa and pierogies are a classic pairing, especially in Polish and Eastern European cuisine. The smoky, savory sausage pairs perfectly with the soft, hearty dumplings.

What Sauce Is Good With Pierogies And Kielbasa?

Simple sauces work best, like melted butter with onions, sour cream, or a light mustard sauce. For more flavor, you can add garlic, herbs, or even a slightly sweet glaze to complement the kielbasa.

Can I Make This In The Oven Instead?

Absolutely. You can bake kielbasa and pierogies on a sheet pan at around 400°F until heated through (usually about 25-30 minutes) and lightly browned. Toss everything halfway through cooking for even crisping.

Tips For the Best Kielbasa and Pierogies

  • If you’re just making plain Air Fryer Pierogies I always recommend spraying them with oil to promote browning, but here I don’t feel you need it due to the oil from the kielbasa. However, feel free to add an extra spritz if you’d like!
  • Not using onions? Toss your pierogies in the butter or oil and the seasonings instead!
  • I have an 8-qt Ninja air fryer, so times and instructions are based on my testing this recipe in it. Other air fryers can vary slightly, so adjust cooking times as needed for your particular model, or cook in batches for small units to prevent overcrowding!

Storage and Reheating

Storage Tips

  • Cool before storing. Let the kielbasa and pierogies cool slightly to avoid excess moisture buildup
  • Store in an airtight container. Keep everything sealed to maintain texture and flavor, and store in the fridge for up to 3-4 days
  • Store together or separately. You can keep them combined for convenience or separate to preserve texture
  • Freeze for longer storage. Freeze in a sealed container for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating

Reheating Tips

  • Air fryer (best for crisping). Reheat at 350°F for 4-6 minutes to bring back crispy edges on both the kielbasa and pierogies
  • Skillet method. Heat over medium with a little butter or oil, flipping occasionally for even browning
  • Oven method. Spread on a baking sheet and warm at 350°F for about 10-15 minutes
  • Microwave (quick option). Heat in short intervals, though all crispiness will soften
  • Add a little moisture if needed. A small splash of water or a bit of butter can help keep the pierogies from drying out

Leftovers Ideas

  • Breakfast hash: Chop everything up and sauté with onions and peppers, then top with a fried egg for an easy, hearty breakfast! See my Kielbasa Hash if you love this breakfast idea!
  • Loaded skillet: Reheat in a pan with extra cheese, caramelized onions, or even a drizzle of mustard or sour cream
  • Pierogi nachos: Crisp the pierogies up, and top with kielbasa, cheese, green onions, and sour cream
  • Sheet pan remix: Toss leftovers with veggies like broccoli or Brussels sprouts and roast until everything is hot and slightly crispy
  • Quick stir-fry: Slice the pierogies and kielbasa, then sauté with cabbage or greens for a fast, savory meal
  • Soup upgrade: Add chopped leftovers to a simple broth or creamy base with veggies for a cozy, filling soup. Check out my Kielbasa Soup recipe for more of these flavors!
  • Grilled or pressed sandwich: Layer sliced kielbasa and pierogies with cheese and mustard, then toast until melty and crisp!
  • Hasselback Kielbasa
  • Kielbasa Tacos

It’s an easy, super customizable, and delicious meal that’s perfect for weeknight dinner or Sunday with the family alike. Plus, leftovers can be turned into a variety of different dishes so you can cook once and make multiple meals if you’re only feeding a couple people.
