All the fun of the grill, with no grill actually required? Yes, please! These hot dog pinecones are one of my favorite summer BBQ treats, because they’re super fun to look at, packed with delicious BBQ flavor, and they’re incredibly easy to make thanks to your air fryer!

What Are Hot Dog Pinecones?
Hot dog pinecones are a fun, creative twist on classic hot dogs where the hot dog is sliced in a crisscross pattern before cooking, giving it a pinecone-like appearance! They’re similar to Hot Dog Burnt Ends, but with a different look and a saucier finish.
As the hot dog cooks, the cuts open up and crisp around the edges, mimicking the layered look of a pinecone. While this dish is often made on the grill, I prefer to make mine in the air fryer! It’s quick, easy, still perfect for summer, and no grill required!
These unique hot dogs are a hit at parties or for kids’ meals because they’re both visually fun and extra flavorful due to the added surface area for browning and crisping.

You can serve them on their own, on skewers, or tucked into buns with your favorite toppings. Best of all, it works with either full-length hot dogs or the smaller pieces, so it’s easy to swap between appetizer and entree options!

Ingredients Needed

- 8 skinless hot dogs (I use Nathan’s all beef)
- 2 Tbsp yellow mustard
- 1 Tbsp BBQ rub of choice
- ¼ cup BBQ sauce
- 1 Tbsp butter, melted
- 1 Tbsp brown sugar
Ingredient Tips and Substitutions
- Any hot dogs you like are fine. You can even swap in chicken or turkey dogs if preferred!
- Adjust the seasonings to taste. If you use a really sweet BBQ sauce, you may want to reduce sugar, or add more sugar for a really vinegary sauce!
Equipment
While you can technically make the cuts on the hot dog with a sharp knife, it takes a long time and you have to go slow to keep the cuts even. I use a hot dog slicing tool to make the process quick and easy (plus it’s great for normal hot dogs too)!
Step By Step Instructions
- Use a hot dog slicer to add cuts to the top of your hot dogs. If you don’t have a hot dog slicer, carefully make cuts around halfway deep into the hot dog, with the lines about about ¼” apart at an angle to create a diamond-shaped pattern across the hot dogs

- Rub the hot dogs evenly with the mustard, then toss with the BBQ seasoning until well coated

- Place the seasoned hot dogs in your air fryer in a single layer, cut side up, with air space between each one. Cook on the air fry setting at 375°F for 5 minutes, or until the cuts start to open up

- After 5 minutes, remove the hot dogs, and cut them into 1 ½” pieces (or you can leave them whole if preferred for an entree). Mix the BBQ sauce, melted butter, and brown sugar together, and baste half of the sauce mixture over the cut dogs
- Place the hot dog pieces back into the air fryer basket cut side up, and air fry an additional 5-7 minutes at 375°F, or until browned to your liking

- Toss with remaining sauce and enjoy!

Recipe FAQs
Why Do You Cut the Hot Dogs?
The cuts create a fun, pinecone-like appearance as the hot dogs curl and crisp up while cooking. They also help the hot dogs cook more evenly and allow for extra surface area to get browned and flavorful.
Can I Make Hot Dog Pinecones in the Air Fryer?
Yes! The air fryer is a great way to make hot dog pinecones quickly with crisp, browned edges. Cook at 375°F for about 10 minutes, basting with sauce halfway through.
What Kind of Hot Dogs Work Best?
Use standard-sized beef or pork hot dogs – avoid extra-thick or jumbo varieties, which may not curl as well or cook evenly. Look for brands with a firm texture so they hold their shape better when scored.
Tips For the Best Hot Dog Pinecones
- Scoring the hot dogs is best done when they are really cold. If you’re having trouble cutting them, stick the dogs in the freezer for 10-15 minutes to firm up more!
- This recipe easily doubles if you’re feeding a crowd. You can cook as many hot dogs at a time as fit in your air fryer in a single layer without affecting cooking time (don’t overcrowd or they won’t crisp up well)!

Storage and Reheating Tips
Storage
Let hot dog pinecones cool completely, then store them in an airtight container in the fridge for 3–4 days. To freeze, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet to flash-freeze, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag for up to 2 months.
Reheating
For best results, reheat in an air fryer at 350°F for 4–6 minutes until warmed through and crisped up again. For a fast option, you can also heat them in the microwave in short bursts to avoid rubbery texture, but the edges will not stay crispy.
Final Thoughts
Hot dog pinecones are a fun twist on classic barbecue fare! Not only are they fun to look at, but the cuts allow for more caramelization and extra flavor from the barbecue rub and sauce to get into all the crevices!
Serve them cut up with toothpicks for the ultimate appetizer or game day snack, or leave the hot dogs whole and pop them on a bun for a unique entree option! I love to make them in the air fryer since it’s quick, easy, and no grill needed – perfect for summer!
