Ingredients List

- 2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips
- 10 ounce bag marshmallows
- 2 Tbsp royal blue sanding sugar
- 4 Tbsp red sanding sugar
- Graham crackers for serving
Ingredient Tips and Substitutions
- You can customize this recipe with other types of chocolate as desired – milk chocolate and dark chocolate are great!
- I use regular sized marshmallows, but you can use mini or jumbo too depending on the size of your dish
- Instead of the sanding sugar, you could also just use plain white marshmallows and add red sprinkles, white sprinkles, and blue sprinkles, or colored M&Ms on top for a different option!
- In addition to the classic graham crackers, I also serve red apple slices, but you could also do Nilla wafers, pretzels, fresh strawberries, or similar!
Equipment Note
You’ll need a baking dish that fits in your air fryer for this recipe. Square or rectangle pans work best for the flag shape, but you could also just alternate colors of marshmallows to do a round or oval dish (or cast iron pan).
I have a dual zone air fryer, so I use two loaf pans, but if you have a larger single basket, a single rectangular or square casserole dish or baking dish will work great!
Step By Step Instructions
- Spray your baking dish(es) with nonstick spray (or rub with butter or Crisco), and spread the chocolate chips evenly across the bottom of the pan(s). If you’re using two smaller dishes, split the chocolate evenly between them

- Grab a small bowl of water, then add the sanding sugars to two other small bowls. Using your fingers (or a toothpick or skewer), dip the tops of the marshmallows into the water just to wet them, then press into the sanding sugar. It will depend on the size of your dish, but plan on 4-9 blue marshmallows, and 10-20 red marshmallows. I dip mine vertically because that’s what’s best for my dish, but you can dip the sides for a wider dish and place them horizontally. Feel free to cut them in half with a pair of scissors for a more shallow dish

- Place the colored marshmallows sugar-side up over top of the chocolate in a flag pattern (make a blue square in the top left and then alternating red and plain white marshmallows in rows to form the stripes)

- Add the filled baking dish(es) to your air fryer. Cook on the air fry setting at 350°F for 5-7 minutes, until the marshmallows just start to brown (but not burn) and the chocolate is melted

- Serve hot, with graham crackers or other dippers as desired!

Recipe FAQs
Can I Make This In The Oven Instead?
Yes! Bake the s’mores dip in an oven-safe dish at 375°F for about 8-10 minutes, or until the marshmallows are melted and golden brown. Keep a close eye on it to prevent burning.
What Kind Of Chocolate Works Best For S’mores Dip?
Milk chocolate is a classic choice for that traditional s’mores flavor, but you can also use dark chocolate for a richer taste or a mix of both for balance. Chocolate chips or chopped chocolate bars both work well.
What Can I Use Instead Of Graham Crackers For Dipping?
There are plenty of options! Try pretzels, vanilla wafers, cookies, strawberries, apple slices, or even pound cake cubes for a fun and flavorful variety of dippers.
Tips For the Best Fourth of July S’mores Dip
- The marshmallows expand as they cook so you don’t need to overpack them in the baking dish (and that’s also why you don’t need to cover the entire marshmallow in sugar; only the side facing up)
- As pictured, this recipe was cooked for 6 minutes in my Ninja Dual zone air fryer. Other air fryers can vary slightly, so adjust cooking time in small increments as needed for your specific model!
- Make sure the marshmallows aren’t tall enough to contact your heating element in your air fryer or else it will burn and smoke (and they can still get pushed around a little in really strong air fryers). Cut the marshmallows in half to make them shorter if needed!

Storage and Reheating
Storage Tips
- Cool before storing. Let the dip cool slightly so condensation doesn’t make it soggy. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3-4 days
- Cover tightly. Use plastic wrap or transfer to an airtight container to keep it from drying out
- Store dippers separately. Keep crackers, fruit, and cookies separate to maintain their texture
Reheating Tips
- Air fryer (quick & easy). Reheat (in a baking dish if you transferred it out) at 350°F for 2-4 minutes until warm and melty
- Oven method. Warm at 350°F for 8-10 minutes until heated through
- Microwave (fastest). Heat in short intervals, stirring if needed, until melted (but the marshmallows will lose their toasty crunch)
- Watch closely. Marshmallows can brown quickly, especially in the air fryer or oven
- Red White and Blue Puppy Chow
Final Thoughts
This Fourth of July s’mores dip is a fun, festive, and patriotic treat perfect for Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, summer cookouts, and more! With just a few simple ingredients, it’s easy to throw together, and perfect for a crowd.
The air fryer does a great job of melting the chocolate and toasting the marshmallows quickly and easily, without turning on the oven in the summer heat, but you can of course use your oven too for a larger tray.
Serve with classic graham cracker dippers, or add some fresh fruit like red apples or fresh strawberries to keep with the patriotic theme. It’s one of those desserts that’s so simple, yet highly enjoyable for kids and adults alike!
