The drunken pirate drink is one of my favorite party cocktails! It’s so easy to make (by the glass or a larger batch) and features sweet tropical flavors on a rum base. I usually serve it for Halloween, but it’s great for pirate themed parties and anytime you want something fruity and fun!

What is a Drunken Pirate Drink?
Yarr, matey! A drunken pirate drink is a rum-based cocktail with tropical and Caribbean-inspired flavors, as one would often associate with pirate-themed drinks. It features both dark and coconut rum as the base spirit and is mixed with tropical fruit juices to add the island vibes.
Finish with some citrus soda to balance the drink and add fizzy fun, and make it into a party punch sure to please your swashbuckling crew. The drunken pirate is a greenish-yellow color like a golden dubloon…with some algae, so you’ll want to make sure there’s enough treasure for everyone!
Garnish with pineapple, a cherry, or even a cocktail umbrella for a refreshing, tropical drink that’s great for serving to guests at beach parties, pirate-themed events, Halloween, and more! I like to serve this rum punch in a nautical-inspired fish bowl glass, but you can also use tiki glasses or something similar.

For Halloween, it pairs perfectly with the Drunk Ghost Cocktail and the Drunk Witch Cocktail for a cast of characters in alcoholic beverage form!

Recipe FAQs
What’s In a Drunken Pirate?
The primary ingredients in a drunken pirate cocktail are spiced or dark rum, pineapple juice, and lemon-lime soda.
Other tropical flavored elements, such as coconut, banana, papaya, guava, mango, melon, or orange can also be added to customize the flavors in your drink.
Can The Drunken Pirate Drink Be Customized?
Yes, the drunken pirate drink can be customized to suit your personal preferences. You can add more tropical fruit flavors like mango or passion fruit juice, or use different rum and other liqueurs.
Adjust the sweetness if needed with simple syrup or grenadine (though I find it fairly sweet to begin with due to the fruit juice and soda), or add tartness with some fresh lemon or lime juice.
Is The Drunken Pirate Cocktail Strong?
Yes, the drunken pirate Cocktail is generally considered strong due to the use of several different liquors and liqueurs.
However, the sweetness from the fruit juices and the soda helps to mellow out the intensity and reduces the alcohol-forward flavor.
Can A Non-Alcoholic Version Of The Drunken Pirate Be Made?
Yes, a non-alcoholic mocktail version of the drunken pirate can be created by substituting the alcohols out. Try peach juice for the schnapps, melon juice for the Midori, coconut cream or milk for the coconut rum, and extra pineapple or apple juice for the regular rum.
Still add the soda, and garnish with fresh fruit and the cocktail umbrella to keep up the beach drink theme.
Recipe Pro Tips For the Best Drunken Pirate Cocktail
- This drink is on the sweeter side as it’s a rum punch (or is that pirate grog in this case)? To reduce sweetness, you can swap in unsweetened sparkling lemon or lime flavored water for the soda
- Since it has multiple different alcohols, this cocktail is on the stronger side (though the flavor isn’t super alcohol-forward thanks to the mixers). However, if you want to reduce strength, you can drop each liquor to ½ ounce instead, or add extra juice and soda to dilute it

Serving and Presentation Tips For the Drunken Pirate Drink
- This pirate grog recipe works in a lot of different glassware. You can use a goblet, highball, white wine glass (stemless or traditional), fish bowl glass, tiki glass, wooden pirate mug, or a pint glass!
- Optionally, a drunken pirate can be garnished with tropical elements like a maraschino cherry, orange slice, or a pineapple wedge. You could also use a sprig of fresh mint for an herbal pop, or an umbrella for a fun, festive presentation!
- The drunken pirate scales easily for parties, and can be mixed up to 24 hours in advance without the soda. Store in a pitcher in the refrigerator until ready to serve, then pour into individual glasses and top with soda (or add to a punch bowl)!
