Ingredients List

- 4 hot dogs (I use all beef)
- 4 hot dog buns
- 4 slices ham
- ¼ cup pulled pork
- 4 slices swiss cheese
- 4 pickle spears
- 2 Tbsp yellow mustard
Ingredient Tips and Substitutions
- Any hot dogs you like are fine, I just prefer all beef franks
- Instead of hot dog buns, you could use Cuban bread, or a sub roll of sorts. Something that presses well is ideal (a baguette is too stiff)
- I prefer sliced swiss cheese, but you can use shredded if you find that easier
- Usually, the pork on a Cuban is mojo pulled pork or another type of roasted pulled pork. BBQ pulled pork works well here too, depending what you have available!
- Feel free to customize the other ingredients as desired, but that will deviate from the traditional Cuban recipe!
Equipment Notes
I use a cast iron grill press (with the wooden handle removed just to be safe) to press my sandwich while toasting it in the air fryer. You could also use another similar heat and food-safe sort of weight instead.
Alternatively, this recipe can be prepared in a panini press instead if you have one!
Step By Step Instructions
- Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (if you don’t have a dedicated preheat, set it to 400°F and run for 3-5 minutes). If you are using a grill press, place it in the air fryer so it also preheats – getting it hot is important to make the crispy edges on the buns!
- Lay a slice of ham and a slice of swiss into your hot dog bun, pushing it down so it follows the ‘u’ shape of the bun

- Add 1 Tbsp pulled pork per bun, then top each with a hot dog. Lay the filled hot dog buns into your preheated air fryer basket sideways (so the side of the bun is facing upright)

- Set the grill press on top of them and press down. Based on the size of my press, I can cook two at once, but this can vary based on your setup

- Cook on the air fry setting at 400°F for 10 minutes, until the fillings are warm and the bun is pressed and toasted to your liking. Repeat for additional Cubano dogs
- Top with a pickle spear and a drizzle of mustard just before serving. Enjoy!

Pairing Suggestions
Side Dishes
- Yuca Fries or Tostones – Crispy and salty, they add a traditional Cuban touch!
- Plantain Chips – Lightly sweet and crunchy, a great contrast to the savory dog
- Cuban Black Beans and Rice – Hearty and authentic, this makes the meal feel more substantial
- Elote (Mexican Street Corn) – A creamy, spicy complement with Latin-inspired flair!
- Sweet Potato Fries – A touch of sweetness pairs well with the tangy mustard and pickles
Drink Pairings
- Cuban Mojito – The fresh mint and lime cut through the richness. Try my Blueberry Mojito for some summer flair!
- Cuba Libre (Rum & Coke with Lime) – Classic, fizzy, and refreshing!
- Pineapple Agua Fresca or Limeade – A non-alcoholic option with tropical brightness
- Crisp Lager or Pilsner – Light beer to balance bold flavors without overwhelming them
Extra Toppings & Sauces (Non-Traditional)
- Mojo Sauce – Great for dipping or drizzling
- Garlic Aioli or Mustard-Mayo Blend – Adds creamy sharpness
- Jalapeño Slices – For a spicy kick!
- Pickled Onions – Bring tang and color
Recipe FAQs
What Is A Cuban Hot Dog?
A Cuban hot dog, also known as a Cubano dog is a flavorful twist on the classic hot dog, inspired by the iconic Cuban sandwich. It includes sliced ham, Swiss cheese, yellow mustard, dill pickles, and sometimes pork, all piled onto a hot dog in a toasted bun.
What Is Typically On A Cuban?
A traditional Cuban sandwich (Cubano) features roasted pork, sliced ham, Swiss cheese, dill pickles, and yellow mustard, all pressed between Cuban bread. Some variations also include salami, especially in the Tampa version.
What’s the History Of Cuban Hot Dogs?
Cuban hot dogs are a modern street food mashup rooted in the flavors of the traditional Cuban sandwich. While not an authentic Cuban dish, they’ve gained popularity as a fun, portable spin on a beloved classic.
This fusion celebrates cultural creativity by combining the nostalgia of a hot dog with the bold, tangy, and savory layers of a Cubano!
Tips For the Best Cuban Hot Dog
- Don’t skip the preheat! I don’t normally preheat my air fryer for most recipes, but getting a hot plate to start really helps get a nice crispy toast on the bread, which is what you want on a Cubano dog!
- Make sure to use oven mitts or something similar to move and plate the grill press – it will get very hot!
- I have a Ninja Dual Zone air fryer. Other air fryers may vary in terms of cooking time (and preheating time) needed, so adjust as needed for your particular model!

Storage and Reheating
Storage Tips
- Refrigerator: Store leftover Cuban hot dogs in an airtight container or wrap them tightly in foil. They’ll stay fresh for up to 3 days
- Separate Components: If possible, store the hot dog, bun, and toppings (like pickles or mustard) separately to keep the bun from getting soggy
Reheating Tips
- Air Fryer (Best Method): Air fry at 350°F for 3–5 minutes until warmed through and slightly crisped (I recommend turning over halfway through)
- Oven: Wrap the hot dogs in foil and bake at 350°F for 10–12 minutes
- Microwave: Use a microwave-safe plate and cover the hot dog with a damp paper towel. Heat in 30-second intervals until hot, but note the bun will lose the crispiness
- Add Fresh Toppings. Cuban hot dogs are best reheated without pickles and mustard. Add fresh of both after reheating to revitalize the flavor and texture!
Final Thoughts
These Cuban hot dogs (or Cubano dogs) are one of my favorite fusion recipes! Fan favorite classic franks meet all the flavors of a Cuban sandwich.
Ham, pork, swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard come together with your hot dog, then get toasted to perfection under a press in your air fryer. The result is a crispy sandwich that’s perfect for lunch or dinner, along with your favorite sides.
