Air Fryer Caprese Sandwich: Easy Panera Copycat Recipe!

Caprese salad is always one of my favorite summer appetizers or sides, because it’s perfect for those fresh summer tomatoes! For a lunch option, though, I make this air fryer caprese sandwich instead, and my version is inspired by the Toasted Garden Caprese at Panera!

  • Ciabatta loaf (or 2 ciabatta rolls)
  • 8 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese (about 8 approx ½” thick slices)
  • 2 vine ripe tomatoes or Roma (sliced into 4 approx ½” thick slices each)
  • 8 fresh basil leaves
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • ½ cup fresh arugula
  • 2 Tbsp balsamic vinaigrette
  • 2 Tbsp garlic aioli

  • I use ciabatta to stay true to the Panera sandwich. Good substitution options include focaccia, sourdough bread, or a baguette
  • While fresh mozzarella is traditional, you can also use burrata (which will be both creamier and runnier)
  • Choose hearty fresh tomatoes that hold up well on a sandwich. Roma, vine, or beefsteak tomatoes should work fine. Feel free to use heirloom for a colorful twist!
  • Instead of fresh basil, you can substitute some pesto (but again this deviates from the Panera recipe)

Make Jimmy John’s Caprese Salami Pesto sandwich instead! Add salami, use pesto instead of fresh basil, balsamic glaze instead of the vinaigrette, add onions and oregano, and use regular mayonnaise instead of garlic aioli. Omit arugula. The tomatoes, bread, and cheese can stay the same!

  1. Place the sandwich into your air fryer’s basket or rack (you can skewer it with toothpicks to hold it together and keep the bread from blowing around)

  1. Air fry at 350°F for 5-7 minutes, until the bread is lightly toasted and the cheese is melty. You can flip halfway through for a more toasted bottom, but this isn’t strictly necessary
  2. Slice if desired (optional) and serve immediately. Enjoy!

  • Avoid the Microwave: It will make the bread chewy and soggy, and doesn’t re-crisp the sandwich well
