Looking for a spooky yet classic cocktail for your adult Halloween party? Then why not give this black mojito a try! It’s a tried and true combination of rum, lime, mint, and a fizzy finish, but with a color that’s perfect for Halloween, special occasions, color palette parties, and more!

What is a Black Mojito?
A black mojito is a twist on the traditional mojito cocktail, incorporating dark ingredients to give it black color profile.
It uses classic mojito ingredients of rum, fresh mint, lime juice, sugar, and soda water. However, instead of white rum, here I’m swapping in black rum (though most dark rums work fine). To get it truly black (and not just “really dark”) I also add a little black food coloring.
You can also use activated charcoal instead of food coloring, or add some blackberry liqueur to regular rum to achieve the dark hue and a richer flavor sure to please your taste buds!

This mixed drink is the perfect spooky cocktail for Halloween parties, gothic events, color palette parties, or any event where a darker aesthetic is desired!

Black Mojito Ingredients

- 2 ounces Kraken black rum (or a similar dark/black rum)
- 1 ounce fresh lime juice
- 3-4 fresh mint leaves
- ½ ounce simple syrup (or to taste)
- 2-3 ounces club soda to top (adjust based on glass size and strength preferences)
- 1 drop black food coloring (I use Wilton black gel icing coloring and dip a toothpick in it)
Ingredient Tips and Substitutions
- You can use any brand of dark or black rum you like, or you can use 1 ½ ounces of the traditional white rum and ½ ounce of a dark colored liqueur (like creme de cassis which is berry flavored, black Sambuca which is licorice flavored, or a similar alcohol of choice)
- The simple syrup can be swapped for honey, agave nectar, or another similar sweetener if preferred
- Instead of club soda, you can also use unsweetened plain or lime flavored sparkling water (if you use lime, you can reduce the fresh lime juice to ½ ounce). You can also swap in Coca-Cola or another dark soda (omit the simple syrup in that case) to add to the darker color and more sweetness
- For the black coloring, it’s optional. The black rum or other options will make it pretty dark, just not truly black. Instead of food coloring, you can also use about ¼ tsp activated charcoal, or a little bit of squid ink or black sesame syrup (though those will alter the flavor slightly)
How to Make a Black Mojito
- Add the mint leaves and simple syrup to a highball glass, then use a muddler (or the back of a wooden spoon) to crush the mint until it releases juices

- Measure out the rum, and adjust with black food coloring if desired. Then, pour the rum and lime juice into the glass with the mint and stir to combine

- Fill the glass with crushed ice (or cubes) and top with club soda

- Garnish with a slice of lime or additional fresh mint leaves if desired, and enjoy!

Recipe FAQs
How Does a Black Mojito Differ from a Regular Mojito?
While a traditional mojito is made with white rum and has a light, refreshing taste, a black mojito uses dark or black rum and sometimes dark fruits or other ingredients to create a deeper flavor profile and a visually striking appearance.
Both versions still contain the other basic ingredients of a mojito, lime, mint, simple syrup, and club soda.
Can I Use Different Fruits in a Black Mojito?
Yes, you can experiment with different dark fruits like blackberries, blueberries, or even pomegranate to add a fruity twist to the black mojito while maintaining its dark color.
Other less common choices would be black cherry, black currant, or black raspberry – basically anything with a naturally dark color is a great option.
Is a Black Mojito Good For Halloween Parties?
Absolutely! The dark and mysterious appearance of the black mojito makes it a popular choice for Halloween parties and other themed events where a dramatic presentation is desired.
It’s also a good option for gothic themed parties, color palette parties, or similar occasions.
What Type of Rum Works Best in a Black Mojito?
Dark rum or black rum works best in a black mojito to achieve the desired color and depth of flavor.
You could also use a dark spiced rum for an added layer of flavor complexity.
Can I Make a Black Mojito Non-Alcoholic?
Yes, you can make a non-alcoholic mocktail version of a black mojito by substituting the rum with a dark-colored soda or juice, like blackberry soda or a mix of pomegranate and lime juice.
Keep the mint and lime to preserve the intended flavor profile, and don’t skip on the garnish which makes your mocktail look more like a real mixed drink.
Recipe Pro Tips For the Best Black Mojito
- Highball glasses are the most traditional for a mojito, but you can use other similar glasses like a Collins or pint glass if needed
- If you’d like to prepare in advance for a party, mix everything but the ice and club soda in a pitcher, and store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Fill individual glasses with ice, add the prepared mix until ½ – ⅔ full depending on desired strength, top with club soda, and serve!

Storage and Serving Suggestions For a Black Mojito
- Due to the carbonation and ice elements, a black mojito is best enjoyed fresh. However, you can refrigerator leftovers for up to 24 hours (but may need to add fresh ice and a little extra soda to perk it back up before consuming)
- While garnishes are optional, lime slices, a sprig of fresh mint, or a fun Halloween decoration like a plastic spider are great options!
