This black martini is a spooky black colored vodka cocktail that’s perfect for Halloween, as well as other elegant occasions when you want a bold statement drink. It features a fruity flavor profile, deep color, and a hint of citrus to tie it all together, for a delicious mixed drink.

What is a Black Martini?
A black martini is a variation of the classic cocktail that features a very dark or black color, achieved by adding a black-colored ingredient.
The base is vodka, but the drink gets its signature hue from the inclusion of a dark liqueur like black raspberry liqueur (e.g., Chambord), blackberry brandy, or even black vodka. Food coloring, or a similar additive, is a good option for helping to deepen the color.
Katie’s tip
You could also use blue curacao mixed with cranberry juice or pomegranate juice to create a deep, dark tone as well, like I do in my Drunk Witch Cocktail.

The flavor of a black martini will vary depending on the mixers used, but it’s generally a sweeter, fruity drink, despite its spooky dark appearance.
It’s a perfect cocktail for Halloween, themed parties, or occasions where a visually striking drink is desired!

Black Martini Ingredients

- 2 ounces vodka
- ½ ounce Chambord (or another raspberry liqueur)
- ½ ounce triple sec (or another orange liqueur)
- 3 ounces pomegranate juice (or a combination like pomegranate cherry)
- ½ tsp black icing (see notes)
Ingredient Tips and Substitutions
- While vodka is classic for a black martini, you could also sub in another clear liquor, such as gin or white rum. Feel free to use a brand of black vodka (such as Blavod) if you can find it for additional depth of color
- The drink is a very deep red color thanks to the pomegranate juice and Chambord, so you could just leave it at that. However, if you want it truly black, it needs a little help, which is why I use black icing (which also adds a touch of sweetness, so win win). Other alternatives include a couple drops of black food coloring, edible charcoal powder, or squid ink (which will add a briny note to the flavor as well)
How to Make a Black Martini
- To a cocktail shaker, add all ingredients along with 2-3 ice cubes

- Shake until well blended and lightly frothy, about 30 seconds, then strain into a chilled martini glass

- Garnish with a twist of lemon or orange peel if desired (optional) and enjoy!

Recipe FAQs
How Is A Black Martini Different From A Classic Martini?
While a classic martini usually consists of gin and dry vermouth, a black martini uses vodka and a dark-colored liqueur or spirit to give it a unique color and flavor profile.
The dark liqueur not only alters the color but also adds a sweet and fruity taste, making it distinct from the more traditional dry martini.
What Occasions Are Best For Serving A Black Martini?
The black martini is ideal for themed events such as Halloween parties, gothic-themed gatherings, color parties, or any occasion where a visually striking and sophisticated cocktail is desired.
Its dark color and bold taste make it a conversation starter at any event.
Can A Black Martini Be Made Non-Alcoholic?
Yes, you can create a non-alcoholic mocktail version of a black martini by using blackcurrant or blackberry juice instead of Chambord, omitting the vodka, and using a non-alcoholic triple sec syrup.
Add a splash of sparkling water for a fizzy and refreshing twist. This allows you to enjoy the same visual appeal and a similar flavor profile without the alcohol content!
Recipe Pro Tips For the Best Black Martini
- If you are using the frosting for coloring like I do, note that you tend to get a little white residue at the top of the drink after shaking. It’s harmless, but does detract from the aesthetic. Pour your drink through a piece of cheesecloth or something similar to grab these small bits if you want to get rid of them!
- I think the drink is plenty sweet thanks to the fruit juice, but for a sweeter drink, you could add some simple syrup or honey to taste

Storage and Serving Tips For Black Martinis
- Since there are no carbonated elements, you can mix your black martinis ahead of time (scale for as many servings as you want). Store in a pitcher in the refrigerator until ready to serve, then stir well and pour into individual glasses
- Typical glassware for serving this black mixed drink is a martini glass (whether traditional or stemless). However, you can also use coupe or wine glass instead. Regardless of choice, use a chilled glass to keep your drink cool longer with less dilution!
- Garnishes are completely optional, but options include: black sugar rim, black olive, cherry, or blackberry garnish, a twist of orange or lemon, or Halloween decor, like a plastic spider. You could also stir in edible glitter for a sparkling finish!
