A black margarita is a bold, dark colored tequila based cocktail that’s perfect for your adult Halloween party! However, it’s also great for color palette parties, black tie affairs, gothic events, and more. It’s my favorite option when Halloween falls on a Taco Tuesday as well!

What is a Black Margarita?
A black margarita is a spooky twist on the classic cocktail, often served around Halloween or other themed events.
Its dark black color comes from the addition of either activated charcoal powder, black food coloring, or a blend of dark-colored liqueurs. I personally shy away from using charcoal in food or drinks, so today I’m using liqueurs to achieve the desired effect (but you can do what’s easiest for you)!
The base of this mixed drink is still a traditional shaken margarita, featuring tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur (though I use orange-flavored blue curacao for the color instead of the usual triple sec or Cointreau). A black salt rim only adds to the drink’s eerie presentation, making it perfect for festive occasions like Halloween, black tie events, or any time you want to make a statement with a bold cocktail.

Black Margarita Ingredients

- 1 ½ oz tequila blanco (or silver)
- ½ oz blue curacao (instead of triple sec)
- 1 oz pomegranate juice
- 1 oz fresh lime juice
- ½ oz agave syrup (or to taste)
- 1-2 drops black food coloring (optional)
For the Rim (Optional):
- Fresh lime wedge
- 1 Tbsp black lava salt or sanding sugar (amount approximate)
Ingredient Tips and Substitutions
- You can use triple sec or a different orange liqueur in place of the blue curaçao, but then you’ll need to add a different element for coloring (like food coloring)
- Instead of pomegranate juice, you could use another dark red colored juice like cherry
- This combination will make the drink naturally a very dark purple color that looks black, except under bright lights. If you want it to be truly black, you’ll likely still need to add a little bit of food coloring (or a food safe activated charcoal powder) just to take the purple edge off
How to Make a Black Margarita
- (Optional) to rim your glass, run the lime wedge around the edge of the glass to wet it, and then dip it into a shallow bowl or plate of black sugar or coarse salt, and turn to coat

- To a cocktail shaker, add all the drink ingredients, along with a couple ice cubes. Fill you margarita glass (or similar) with fresh ice (cubes or crushed)

- Shake until the drink is well mixed, chilled, and lightly frothy, about 20-30 seconds, then strain the mixture into the prepared glass

- Garnish with a slice of lime or orange if desired, and enjoy!

Recipe FAQs
What Gives A Black Margarita Its Color?
The dark color in a black margarita usually comes from activated charcoal, black food coloring, or dark liqueurs like blackberry, black raspberry (Chambord), or blackcurrant mixed with blue curacao.
These ingredients help transform a traditional amber-colored margarita into a deep black or dark purple hue.
Can A Black Margarita Be Made Without Food Coloring?
Yes, you can make a black margarita without food coloring by using natural ingredients like blackberry or blackcurrant liqueur along with blue curacao to create a purple so dark that it appears black.
Another alternative is to add activated charcoal to achieve the dark color, but it’s not recommended for extensive consumption and can have some side effects, so I generally avoid it.
How Do You Serve A Black Margarita For A Halloween Party?
To serve a black margarita for a party, scale up the recipe for the number of servings desired. Mix everything together in a large pitcher or carafe and store in the refrigerator.
When ready to serve, rim individual glasses, fill them with ice, and then give the pitcher a stir before pouring out into the glasses for your guests.
Is A Black Margarita Different In Flavor From A Regular Margarita?
The basic flavor of a black margarita is similar to a traditional margarita with tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur (in the form of blue curacao in this case).
However, additional ingredients like blackberry liqueur, pomegranate or cherry juice, or activated charcoal will add fruity or other subtle flavor notes that make this specialty margarita different from the original.
Recipe Pro Tips For the Best Black Margaritas
- You can adjust the strength of this drink by adding more or less tequila as desired, but the recipe as written is a good starting point for a middle of the road strength drink
- Same concept with the sweetness! To adjust the sweetness, use more or less agave, or for more tartness, add more lime juice. As written, I feel this cocktail is well balanced with both, but you can adjust for your personal tastes!

Storage and Serving Suggestions For Black Margaritas
- For glassware, you can use the more traditional margarita glass, or a lowball rocks-style glass is an equally great choice
- This recipe scales well for parties. You can make it up to 24 hours in advance, and simply store in a pitcher in the refrigerator until ready to serve in individual glasses (add any rims, ice, and garnishes only when serving)
- Garnishes are optional, but some good options include the black salt or sugar rim, a fresh blackberry skewer, or Halloween-themed decorations like gummy worms or plastic spiders! You can also add a slice of lime or orange to the drink. Feel free to use a dried version to add a decaying vibe, or dye it black to match with food coloring for a creepier feel!

Final Thoughts
These black margaritas are a spooky, delicious twist on the classic tequila-based mixed drink. The distinctive black color is perfect for Halloween, black tie events, gothic parties, and more!
Using dark fruit juices and liqueurs adds fruity flavor and an eerie vibe to the drink, but you can always tweak it to the perfect hue with food coloring as well. I love that it’s customizable to suit your needs and tastes!
Even though the color makes it appropriate for spooky season, I have no problem serving these mixed drinks up for a twist on taco night, since I love the deep berry flavors in combination with bright citrus for a refreshing sip.
