What is a Beetlejuice Shot?

A Beetlejuice shot is a Halloween-themed cocktail inspired by the 1988 movie Beetlejuice. The drink is known for its vibrant and spooky appearance, featuring layers of contrasting colors to mimic the quirky and eerie vibe of the film.

This shot combines equal parts of various alcohols to create a visually striking and delicious drink. While there are different options to choose from, the typical presentation is a layer of black, white, and green, though red can be swapped for the green if preferred.

The Beetlejuice shot is popular during Halloween and movie night alike, if you’re watching the Beetlejuice movies. If you’re not a fan of shots or shooters, you may also like my Beetlejuice Cocktail as a more sippable option!

Beetlejuice Shot Ingredients

ingredients to make layered beetlejuice shot
  • ½ ounce creme de cassis (or another black liqueur)
  • ½ ounce Midori melon liqueur (or another green liqueur)
  • ½ ounce RumChata (or another white liqueur)

Ingredient Tips and Substitutions

  • The amounts are based on a standard 1 ½ ounce shot glass. If you use the taller shooter glasses, which are 2 ounces, then just add a little extra to each equally to fill the glass
  • Creme de cassis is a blackcurrant liqueur with a very very dark burgundy color that looks nearly black, but if you are worried about it being too reddish, you can add a drop of black food coloring to tint it completely
  • A special note on specific gravity: when it comes to layered shots, the gravity of each alcohol determines the order they will layer, and the more sugary the liqueur, the heavier it is as a general rule. If you use different combinations of liquors, the colors may appear in a different order, and if two are the same, they will combine instead of layer
  • Substitutions: Another combination that works is black sambuca, Disaronno velvet, and vodka with green food coloring added. For a different order, you can do Rumchata, black sambuca, and a green tinted liquor like vodka as well. You can definitely try other combos, but the specific gravity will determine if it works or not!

  1. Measure out the RumChata, then pour it slowly over the back of a standard cutlery teaspoon into the shot glass on top of the black layer. Using the spoon will help to slow and disperse the liquid so it creates the layered effect

Recipe FAQs

What Makes The Beetlejuice Shot Popular At Halloween Parties?

The Beetlejuice shot is popular at Halloween parties because of its fun, spooky appearance and its sweet, fruity flavor.

The layers of contrasting colors make it a visually striking choice for themed events.

Can The Beetlejuice Shot Be Customized With Different Ingredients?

Yes, a Beetlejuice shot can be customized with different liqueurs to suit your taste, or depending what is available in your area.

You can experiment with various combinations to create your own version while still keeping the distinctive look. My version as written gives a bit of apple pie vibes in terms of flavor, while still looking spooky.

Is The Beetlejuice Shot Difficult To Make?

The Beetlejuice shot looks impressive, but is actually relatively easy to make, especially if you layer the ingredients carefully.

Just make sure to take your time and pour slowly, and after a little practice you’ll find that they are not intimidating at all.

What Is The Best Way To Serve A Beetlejuice Shot?

A Beetlejuice shot, as the name implies, is best served in a shot or shooter glass, but you can also use a small, clear glass to highlight the layered colors.

Feel free to garnish it with Halloween-themed decorations for added flair.

Can The Beetlejuice Shot Be Made In Large Quantities For A Party?

Yes, you can make as many shots as you like, and since the proportions of each alcohol are equal, it’s easy to scale up.

Just make sure to pour slowly to get the layering effect in each one. You can prepare them ahead of time and store covered until ready to serve to save time later, though!

Recipe Pro Tips For the Best Beetlejuice Shots

  • Don’t let layered shots intimidate you! The first time I made one, I was convinced I would mess it up (and even if you do, it’ll still taste good, so who cares)! Just remember to pour slowly over a spoon when adding layers, and take a deep breath – you got this!
  • Since some of the alcohols used here are very close in specific gravity, it’s normal to see a little mixing at the edge of the layers – it’s not going to be 100% clean (but you’ll still get distinct stripes for sure)!

Storage and Serving Suggestions For Beetlejuice Shots

  • If you are making a batch for a party, it’s easy to scale up ingredients because it’s always equal proportions of whatever alcohols you are using. Feel free to use shot-sized plastic cups to make cleanup easier!
  • You can layer your shots in advance and place them on a serving tray, then cover and store until ready to serve, which saves you time! I do not recommend storing them in the fridge, as I find that the RumChata layer thickens up and creates an unpleasant texture that way (just leave them at room temperature)
  • While garnishes are not needed for shots, you can add spooky twists like a gummy worm, or a black sugar or salt rim if desired

Final Thoughts

These fun Beetlejuice shots will make you the best ghost host for your adult Halloween party, or for watching the Beetlejuice movies!

While there are different combinations you can use to achieve the same layered effect, I like the fruity flavor of this. Plus, if you’re not a fan of licorice (which is what Sambuca is), this is a great alternative that’s far less divisive among palettes!
