Ingredients List

- 2 firm large red apples (I use Fuji)
- 13 ounces puff pastry (defrosted if frozen)
- 3 Tbsp apple butter
- 1 Tbsp lemon juice (prevents browning)
- Powdered confectioners’ sugar for dusting (optional)
Ingredient Tips and Substitutions
- You can use any red apples you like as long as they don’t get mushy when cooked (avoid Macintosh). I use Fuji, but Honeycrisp and Gala are other good options
- I use refrigerated puff pastry dough (Jus Rol) so it’s a slightly smaller package than the frozen ones from Pepperidge Farm. You can absolutely use the larger one, just add an extra apple to compensate
- The apple butter can be swapped for apple jelly, apricot preserves, or 2 tsp of cinnamon or apple pie spice if desired. You can also add a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar if you want a sweeter option
Equipment Note
You’ll need a muffin tin or individual silicone muffin cups that fit in your air fryer (I use a silicone muffin tray that I cut to fit – just make sure it doesn’t have metal supports if you plan to do this)!
Step By Step Instructions
- Cut your apples in half and remove the core (use a melon baller or a measuring spoon to make this easier)! Then, thinly slice the apples (about ⅛” thick). You can use a sharp knife, a mandoline slicer, or the slicer on a food processor or box grater (whatever is easiest)

- Place apple slices in a microwave-safe bowl and add the lemon juice. Then, add just enough water to cover them. Microwave on high for 3 minutes, or until you can bend the apple slices without them snapping (times can vary by variety and thickness of apples, and microwave wattage). Drain and pat dry with a paper towel or kitchen towel (or let air dry if you have time)

- Roll out your puff pastry dough (add flour or parchment to your work surface if needed to prevent sticking) and press out any seams or creases so it’s nice and flat. Cut it in half vertically (use a knife or pizza cutter), then cut each half into 6 even strips horizontally. If you use the frozen puff pastry dough with 2 sheets, you don’t need to cut it in half first, just cut each sheet into strips

- Spread the apple butter evenly across the strips of dough (should just be a thin layer). Then, place an apple slice onto the puff pastry strip so that the rounded (red skin) edges of apple slices stick up above the edge of the dough strip. Then, add another, overlapping about ⅓ of the previous apple. Repeat until all the apple slices are laid out on the dough

- Fold the dough up over the bottom (non skin side) edge of the apples, then roll the filled dough up, then make sure to smooth the end of the dough strip to seal the roll together. Repeat until all roses are assembled

- Transfer roses into your muffin cups and then into your air fryer’s basket or rack in a single layer

- Air fry at 375°F (or the closest setting your air fryer has) for 8-10 minutes, until the puff pastry is cooked through
- Serve warm or room temperature, with a dusting of powdered sugar if desired. Enjoy!

Recipe FAQs
Can I Bake This Recipe Instead?
Yes, you can bake apple roses in a conventional oven. Bake at 375°F until the pastry is puffed and golden, usually 35-40 minutes, covering loosely if they brown too quickly.
Why Is My Puff Pastry Still Raw?
This usually happens if the apples release too much moisture or the roses are packed too tightly. Make sure the apples are thinly sliced, well-drained, and the pastry has enough airflow while baking or air frying.
Do I Need To Peel The Apples First?
Peeling is optional. Leaving the peel on adds color and structure, while peeling creates a softer, more uniform texture. Both work well depending on your preference.
Tips For the Best Apple Roses
- Air fryers can vary between brands, models, and sizes, so start with the lowest cooking time and then check and adjust in small increments as needed for best results
- Don’t wrap the dough too tightly – you want room for it to breathe and expand! I push down a bit on the apples as I roll and after I place them in the cups to ensure they’re well seated and don’t push up during cooking
- Make sure to dry the apple slices well after softening (and that they are actually softened). You don’t want extra moisture, as that can keep the puff pastry from baking correctly. If you need to add extra cooking time because of too much moisture, you will want to add foil over the tops to prevent the apples from burning

Storage and Reheating
Storage Tips
- Let apple roses cool completely before storing to prevent soggy pastry
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days
- If stacking, place parchment paper between layers to protect their shape
Reheating Tips
- Reheat in the air fryer at 325°F for 3–5 minutes to re-crisp the puff pastry (no cups needed; they’ll hold their shape at this point)
- An oven works too! Warm at 350°F for about 8–10 minutes
- Avoid the microwave, as it softens the pastry and dulls the flaky texture

Final Thoughts
These apple roses are a delicious addition to your dessert table, and easy to make even though they look more complicated than they are. The apples make them a perfect fall dessert, but the rose-shaped pastry makes them suitable for Valentine’s Day and date night too!
I make mine in the air fryer since it’s quick and convenient, but a conventional oven works if you want to make a larger batch (and don’t mind waiting for it to preheat)! You can experiment with different fruits and fillings as well to customize the recipe for other seasons.
