Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Whether you’re team love it or hate it, green bean casserole is a classic holiday casserole. It’s very easy to make, warm and hearty, and perfect for a simple side dish. Plus, it’s a vegetarian option as well, making it a flexible option for dietary needs!

It’s widely known to have 4 core ingredients: green beans, cream of mushroom soup, milk, and french fried onions. Now, that said, there are lots of other things you can add into it to add your own twist!

The great thing about the air fryer is that it cuts down the cooking time from 30 minutes in a regular oven to 15 minutes! It also helps free up the big oven for, say, the turkey! Let the air fryer handle the sides without competing for space.

Plus, this is one of those casseroles that you can make in advance and store in the fridge until you’re ready to cook, making for a great time saver!

Ingredients List

ingredients to make air fryer green bean casserole
  • 10.5-ounce can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 4 cups cut cooked green beans (drained canned, frozen, or fresh cooked)
  • Β½ cup milk (or ΒΌ cup for a thicker casserole)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Β½ tsp salt
  • ΒΌ tsp black pepper

  • 1 Β½ cups french fried onions (divided) – approx 6 ounce bag

Special Equipment Note: You need an oven safe pan that fits in your air fryer’s basket or rack. This could be a casserole dish, cake pan, silicone pan, or anything similar.

I use two mini loaf pans because I have a Dual Zone air fryer with two smaller baskets (but one larger pan is fine as well)!

Ingredient Tips and Substitutions

  • If you don’t like cream of mushroom soup, less traditional options that work well are cream of celery, cream of chicken, cream of potato, or cheddar cheese soup. You can also use golden mushroom soup if preferred!
  • The Worcestershire sauce can be swapped for soy sauce, or omitted entirely if preferred
  • All the seasonings are adjustable to taste, including omitting them if preferred (and what you need will vary based on your soup)
  • Cheesy variation: Add ΒΌ cup Parmesan or ΒΌ cup shredded cheddar cheese to your casserole for a cheesy twist!
  • Bacon variation: Add ΒΌ cup cooked, crumbled bacon to the mix for a smoky, salty variation (after all, isn’t everything better with bacon?)

Recipe FAQs

Can I Make Green Bean Casserole in an Air Fryer?

Yes, you can make a green bean casserole in an air fryer, so long as you have an oven safe pan that fits in your air fryer’s basket or rack.

It cooks more quickly than a traditional oven and delivers an equally good result, making for a great alternative option.

What’s the Advantage of Using an Air Fryer for This Casserole?

Air fryers provide a quick and efficient way to cook dishes like green bean casserole. They produce a crispy topping and perfectly cooked filling in about half the time of a conventional oven.

Plus, you can leave the larger range oven open for roasting a main course by making the sides in your air fryer.

Can I Use Frozen Green Beans for This Recipe?

Absolutely! Frozen green beans are perfect for this recipe, and do not need to be defrosted before cooking.

I recommend cut green beans to make eating them easier compared to the full length version.

How Long Does It Take to Cook Green Bean Casserole in the Air Fryer?

On average, it takes around 15 minutes at 350Β°F (175Β°C) to cook a green bean casserole in the air fryer.

Cooking times may vary depending on the specific air fryer model and the quantity of casserole.

Is It Possible to Prepare This Casserole in Advance and Reheat It in the Air Fryer?

Yes, you can prepare the casserole in advance and refrigerate it. When you’re ready to serve, reheat it in the air fryer at a lower temperature (around 300Β°F or 150Β°C) to avoid overcooking the topping.

You may also prepare it without the topping, and just add the topping on during the reheating process.

Can I Customize the Ingredients in the Casserole to Suit Dietary Preferences?

Absolutely! You can adapt the ingredients to cater to dietary preferences, including using gluten free ingredients.

Try adjusting seasonings, or choosing low-sodium, non-dairy, or organic options.

Can You Put a Casserole Dish in an Air Fryer?

Yes, you can put a casserole dish in an air fryer. If it is oven safe, it is air fryer safe as well.

Just make sure to measure both the width and the height to ensure that the dish fits in your air fryer’s basket or on the rack without touching the sides or the heating element.

Recipe Pro Tips

  • You do not need to preheat your air fryer for this recipe. My casserole was perfectly cooked from cold in 15 minutes total in a Ninja Dual Zone air fryer. Other brands may vary slightly
  • Remember that the baking dish will be hot just like if you were removing it from an oven. Use oven mitts for safety!

Storage and Reheating Tips

  • Store leftover green bean casserole covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Freezing is not recommended for this variety of casserole
  • To reheat, air fry in an oven safe dish for 3-5 minutes at 325Β°F, or until your portion is warmed through and the top is re-crisped. If your topping is over-browning, cover the dish with some foil

Final Thoughts

Whether it’s a must have or a hard pass for you, green bean casserole is an iconic fall casserole. It graces many Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner tables as classic comfort fare.

It’s incredibly easy to make, requiring just 4 core ingredients. However, even at the 8 that I use to season it up a bit, it doesn’t change the difficulty level at all. It’s a nearly foolproof casserole that kids and adults enjoy.

As is, it’s also a vegetarian friendly option, as long as you don’t swap in a chicken based soup!

The air fryer cooks green bean casserole in just 15 minutes, saving you time compared to the conventional oven. Plus, that leaves that space open for something like roasting a turkey!
